TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Professor of English—with Tenure (August 2001-Present)

University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Belton TX

Duties: Develop and teach courses sophomore literature, global literature, and scientific writing. Advise English majors and minors. Contribute to planning and development of curriculum for English majors and minors. Evaluate writing portfolios of English majors. Coordinate textbooks and assignments for developmental writing. Organize the African American Read-In and the Black History Month creative writing contest. Serve on the Academic IQ Council, the Undergraduate Research committee, the Curriculum Committee, the Commencement Committee, and various hiring committees.

Assistant Professor of English (August 1999-July 2001)

Huston-Tillotson College, Austin, TX

Duties: Developed and taught basic writing, English for international students, freshman composition, technical writing, and research techniques. Tutored students in the writing-across-the-curriculum writing center and in the Learning Empowerment Center. Conducted workshops on TASP preparation. Advised English majors and freshmen. Designed curriculum for developmental studies program. Constructed web site to accompany developmental writing and ESL courses. Participated on faculty budget and academic advising committees. Developed on-line courses with Blackboard.com. Integrated technology with pedagogy in all classrooms. Collaborated with another faculty member to develop an intensive English course for international students.

Adjunct Assistant Professor of English (September 1999-August 2001)

Austin Community College, Austin, TX

Duties: Taught freshman composition to a culturally and linguistically diverse

student body. Tutored individual students with attention deficit disorder as

well as students from China, Korea, and the Middle East who were working

to improve their command of written English. Wrote letters of recommendation. Participated in holistic grading workshops. Attended Blackboard training sessions and internet literacy training sessions. Learned on-line teaching strategies and various ways to integrate technology into the composition classroom.

Adjunct Instructor of English (August 1998-December 1998)

St. Edward's University, Austin, TX

Duties: Taught composition to basic writing students enrolled in the one-semester Freshman Studies Program. Assisted with note-taking skills and facilitated group discussion of the literature covered in the lecture portion of the class in order to increase the reading comprehension of the students. Holistically evaluated essays of all entering freshmen with other professors in the Freshman Studies Program. Supervised a student intern. Taught students basic internet skills. Tutored individual students with dyslexia as well as students who were learning English as a second language.

Adjunct Instructor of English (August 1995-December 1995)

Tarrant County Junior College, Ft. Worth, TX

Duties: Taught basic writing to students preparing for the TASP test. Taught basics of grammar, organization, and development as part of the writing process. Supervised their activities in the learning skills center. Instructed students in the use of the computer as part of the composing and revising process. Tutored individual students with adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Holistically evaluated exit essays of all freshmen.

Graduate Teaching Assistant (August 1994-May 1995)

Tarleton State University, Stephenville, TX

Duties: Taught two sections of Rhetoric and Composition I and two sections of

Rhetoric and Composition II, including writing principles, methods of

organization, and the research process. Participated on freshman textbook selection and graduate assistant hiring committees. Interviewed prospective teaching assistants.

Assistant Director of Writing Lab (September 1993-May 1994)

Tarleton State University

Duties: Tutored students in writing-across-the-curriculum in the composing process and the development of editing skills. Included students from freshman English, technical writing, upper-level literature, history, business, nursing, and the social sciences. Instructed students in the use of the computer as a medium for the composing process. Supervised one student worker. Maintained files on ESL and developmental students who worked regularly in the center. Tutored students to pass the in-house essay exit exam with a success rate of eighty-eight percent. Specialized in populations with specific needs such as returning students, hearing-impaired students, and international students.

Duties: As part of a temporary project, holistically evaluated eighth and tenth grade TAAS essays for the Texas Education Agency and participated in the selection of topics for next year's essays.

Graduate Assistant (January 1996-May 1998)

Texas Christian University, Ft. Worth, TX

Duties: Assisted various professors with library and internet research. Selected books for library acquisition. Assisted with translation of texts from Old English into contemporary English. Served on committee responsible for yearly graduate student symposium. Located speakers for the symposium, read proposals, and assisted with registration.

Communications Assistant (April 1996-June 1997)

Texas Christian University, Ft. Worth, TX

Duties: Researched, wrote, edited, entered data, and proofed publications for

TCU's fund raising campaign. Wrote proposals which resulted in a quarter

of a million dollars for the athletic and fine arts departments, the school of

business, and the intensive English program. Interviewed donors and

researched material for articles. Wrote and edited speeches. Wrote, edited and designed layout for articles in the campaign newsletter. Wrote and proofed letters written under the Chancellor's signature to contributing alumni. Wrote model letters used by departments across campus for fund raising.
