6thSunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

Years ago, the bishops of the United States issued a “Pastoral Statement on Fasting and Abstinence” (PSFA) which is a very thoughtful explanation of why Jesus taught us to do penance by word and example. (see note on the other page in the bulletin for the rules that Catholics follow.)

Christian peoples, members of a Church that is at once holy, penitent, and always in process of renewal, have from the beginning observed seasons and days of penance. They have done so by community penitential observances as well as by personal acts of self-denial; they have imitated the example of the spotless Son of God Himself, concerning Whom the Sacred Scriptures tell us that He went into the desert to fast and to pray for forty days” (Mk 1:13).(PSFA 3)

The bishops, with genuine and fatherly concern for our spiritual development, encourage us to make the most of this season of renewal. “Wherefore, we ask, urgently and prayerfully, that we, as people of God, make of the entire Lenten Season a period of special penitential observance.” (PSFA 12)

Among the suggestions that the bishops made are these:

  1. daily Mass
  2. voluntary fasting beyond what is required
  3. generosity to the poor
  4. spiritual studies, beginning with the Scriptures
  5. traditional Lenten Devotions (sermons, Stations of the Cross, and the rosary),
  6. and all the self-denial summed up in the Christian concept of "mortification.(PSFA 14)

Then their counsel to us took on a more general call to Christian witness. “Let us witness to our love and imitation of Christ, by special solicitude for the sick, the poor, the underprivileged, the imprisoned, the bedridden, the discouraged, the stranger, the lonely, and persons of other color, nationalities, or backgrounds than our own. A catalogue of not merely suggested but required good works under these headings is provided by Our Blessed Lord Himself in His description of the Last Judgment (Mt 25:34-40). This salutary word of the Lord is necessary for all the year, but should be heeded with double care during Lent.”(PSFA 15)

And then a special significance is given to: “Friday itself remains a special day of penitential observance throughout the year, a time when those who seek perfection will be mindful of their personal sins and the sins of mankind which they are called upon to help expiate in union with Christ Crucified.” (PSFA 22)“Friday should be in each week something of what Lent is in the entire year. For this reason we urge all to prepare for that weekly Easter that comes with each Sunday by freely making of every Friday a day of self-denial and mortification in prayerful remembrance of the passion of Jesus Christ.” (PSFA 23)

With prayer to the Holy Spirit that He may move you to a deep love for Jesus Crucified and an ardent desire to imitate Him in His suffering and death,

Fr. Martin Flum

RULES OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection. For more information go to:
