LESSON PLAN

Subject
PE / Class
Year 9 PEB / Unit
Te Ao Kori / Topic
Tapu Ae 2.
Achievement Objective(s)
AO5A1- movement skills- Acquire and apply complex movement skills by using basic principles of motor learning.
Learning Outcome(s) and/or Learning Intentions
What should the students learn?
Students will be able to describe how to improve accuracy of passes and shots / Assessment and/or Success Criteria
How do we know what we have learnt?
See students listening to throwing technique
See students using technique in activities
See students using technique in games.
Key Competency Focus
How is this key competency developed in this lesson?
Thinking- students will need to learn new skills in throwing and also decide which is more effective for them.
Āe= yes Kāo = no titiro mai- look this way. Whakarongo mai- listen to me E Noho = sit down
E Tu= stand up Kaitiaki ( respect resources).
Time / Student Learning Activities / Teacher Activities

Warm up
Soft ball tag.
Place students in a grid about the size of a tennis court. Give the students 3-5 soft balls (depending on class size) students will run a round in the grid and by throwing the softball will try and catch other players. When caught these players become the new catchers.
Students can do their own stretches. Assist students where necessary.
Activity 1.
Have students discuss which was more effective and why for them.
Students will put there learnt skills into the game of Tapu Ae. Again make sure that students rotate positions ( see attached information for rules and information on tapu ae)
Conclusion (wrap up)
Who thinks their throwing ability has improved?
Who was able to score points by shooting accurately in the game?
Who preferred underarm or over arm throwing and why?
Changing time!!! / Introduce today’s learning outcome ( see above)
Today we are looking to improve our target shooting!
Teach the underarm technique ( see attached sheet).
Students will then complete a throwing activity race in small groups.
Place 3 tall cones at the front and then flat cones at 2m interval moving back. Players will take it in turn to throw their tennis ball. They get to move back a row once all coned have been hit. ( one player may want to go as a back stop).
Students who struggle may use a larger ball.
Once all students have finished move onto the over arm throw and repeat the same exercise.
Equipment
Tapu ae- game and rules information.
20 tall cones, 7 balls, 15 bibs, 16 flat cones.
Teacher Evaluation
Student achievement – where to next?
Teacher practice – what have I learnt?
what will I change?

Underarm throwing.

Swing the Arm Freely

The best way to ensure an accurate throw is by letting the arm hang loosely, even when being swung underneath the shoulder for the throw. Ideally, you should try to position the arm to be as close to completely vertical as possible when it is swinging through and about to release the ball. This enables the ball's momentum to move straight toward your target. The minimized lateral motion makes it less likely that the ball will travel off course to the left or right. It takes time to learn how to swing your arm with strength while following the course of your momentum, but over time it greatly improves your accuracy.

Step With Your Opposite Foot

Many young athletes learning how to throw underhanded make the mistake of stepping forward with the foot on the same side as their throwing arm. This can create an imbalance in your body's positioning that is likely to throw your toss off course. By stepping with your opposite foot, you can remain balanced and move forward evenly as you toss and release the ball.

Focus Throughout

Throughout the entire throw, from the windup to the follow-through, your eyes should be trained on the target you are throwing toward, whether it's a catcher's mitt or a beanbag basket. Your aim will naturally guide itself to the location your eyes are targeting, and wandering eyes can produce unsteady throws. Additionally, you should be sure to follow through on each toss, with the arm finishing with a short upward follow-through toward the target.

Over arm technique.

Students should stand with their body side on to the target, there front hand should be out straight pointing at the target. The throwing elbow should be higher than the shoulder and as the throwing arm comes forward there should be a slight flick in the wrist. At the same time the font arm moves backwards.
