6th Annual Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference
Alaska EPSCoR Travel Application for Presenters
March 20-22, 2013 – Nome, Alaska
Alaska EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) announces the availability of travel funding for the 2013 Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference (WAISC), to be held March 20-22 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Northwest Campus in Nome, Alaska. The theme of the 2013 conference is “Rural Science in Action.”
WAISC is Western Alaska’s only annual science forum, and serves as a venue to bring together individuals from across Alaska to interact and to participate in regional science and education. The event attracts a diverse set of participants, including experienced researchers, backyard inventors, and high school students; participants are encouraged to present papers and posters and to contribute to discussions on topics of regional importance. Presentations include topics relevant to rural life, such as energy, mining, fisheries, ecology, conservation, water quality, waste disposal, subsistence & traditional knowledge, and math & science education.
WAISC is supported by a partnership of university departments, government agencies, non-government organizations and private industry. The goals of the conference include promoting place-based research and education, supporting the integration of scientific disciplines with traditional knowledge, and helping to sustain economic, ecological and cultural resources in Western Alaska.
Since the first WAISC in 2008, Alaska EPSCoR has provided individual grants to offset the cost of participant travel. Grants of up to $1,500 are available for the 2013 conference. Grantees will be selected from the applicant pool by a panel consisting of conference organizers, faculty and staff from the UAF-Bristol Bay Campus, and the Alaska EPSCoR Outreach Manager. The number and amount of individual awards will be left to the discretion of the committee.
If you need travel assistance to present at the 2013 WAISC, please fill out the Travel Funding Application below and email it to or fax it to 1-907-474-1528. Applications are due by February 15, 2013. Participants selected for travel funding will be required to provide additional information prior to making any travel arrangements.
