Overall purpose of job:
The Level 2Swimming Instructor will be responsible to the Swimming Development Manager for the safe and effective delivery of sessions that are part of the section’s swimming instruction programme.
Post holders will be expected to be flexible in undertaking the duties and responsibilities attached to their post and may be asked to perform other duties, which reasonably, correspond to the general character of the post and are commensurate with its level of responsibility.
Main responsibilities:
1 / Deliver lessons to individuals or groups that achieve the aims of the swimming instructionprogramme within the ability ranges from non-swimmer to development classes
2 / Prepare lesson plans that enable the Swimlincs and schools Key Stage 2programmes to be delivered efficiently and effectively.
3 / Advise individuals and/or parents about their / their child’s development, ability and achievements.
4 / Compile and maintain records that assist in monitoring the effectiveness of lessons.
5 / Provide information to other instructors and administrative staff to allow the efficient and effective administration of the swimminginstruction programme.
6 / Promote the swimminginstruction programme to aid continued development.
7 / Maintain the highest possible standard of customer care at all times
8 / Attend regular ‘Continuing Professional Development’ (CPD) training sessions to maintain the level of knowledge and skills required by relevant governing bodies.
9 / To implement agreed health and safety procedures and codes of practice at all times.
Knowledge, skill and experience:
Qualifications:
ASA Level 2 – Teachers Certificate (Swimming); or
ASA UKCC Level 2 Certificate (Teaching Aquatics); or
STA – STC(F) Certificate; or
STA – STA Certificate in Swimming Teaching (from 2012)
Skills and Knowledge:
Skilled in delivering a variety of lessons to a range of ages from non-swimmers to development classes
Possess strong customer care skills
Possess excellent verbal communication skills
Knowledge of child protection procedures
Evidence of commitment to CPD
Creativity and innovation:
Prepare and deliver lessons within the framework provided by recognised governing body guidelinesand NLC guidelines.
Support Level 1 teachers as requested by the Swimming Development Manager
Regularly assess individuals in accordance with recognised bodyand NLCguidelines and offer advice, assistance and support.
Dealing with disruptive individuals during the course of a lesson.
Dealing with individuals / parents who may be difficult or upset using customer care techniques.
Ensuring the safety of individuals during the lesson.
Required to plan and deliver stimulating, motivating and appropriate exercises within the individual lesson framework.
Promote the activity to enable the further take up of lessons.
Contacts and relationships:
Daily contact with individuals about swimminglessons issues some of which could be contentious.
Daily contact with individuals to motivate whilst delivering swimminglessons.
Contact with the other unitmanagers, administrative staff and other instructors about organisational issues.
Decision making:
Responsible for applying agreed recognised governing body and NLC guidelines.
Decisions in connection with the most appropriate solutions to dealing with queries or complaints from individuals.
Required to make decisions on individual pupil’s progress in accordance with laid down standards.
Responsible for maintaining a safe environment for individuals or groups when delivering lessons.
Recommend to the Swimming Development Manager changes to the swimming instructionprogramme.

Physical resources:Responsible for the proper use and safekeeping of the On Course ipad, teaching aids and associated equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work demands:
Generally required to work to set programmes and routines.
Interruptions from parents / guardiansduring the course of the lesson.
Physical demands:
Required to move lightweight teaching aids and equipment.
Provide occasional physical support to individuals during the lesson as and when approved by the Swimming DevelopmentManager.
Working conditions:
Work within a warm and humid pool hall environment
Occasionally required to teach in the water as and when approved by the Swimming Development Manager.
Work context:
Potential conflict with disgruntled customers.
