A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes from the May 26, 2009, as submitted.

  1. Curriculum Instructional Materials Update– Katie Bray

K-12 Science Instructional Materials

  • The instructional materials were approved by the Board of Education in the spring of 2009
  • The instructional materials have been ordered and are being delivered on a continuous basis to the buildings
  1. Curriculum Pilots Update–Katie Bray

Fine Arts (includes: Elementary Music, Secondary Vocal Music, High School Drama, K-12 Visual Arts)

K-12 Health / Physical Education

  • The updated curriculum guides were approved by the Board of Education in the May 2009
  • Meetings are planned for the first week of October to discuss the piloting session for these groups
  • Piloting will take place during the second semester of the 2009-2010 school-year
  1. Curriculum Guide/Pilot Update– Katie Bray

Fine Arts – Grade 4-12 Orchestra

  • A meeting is planned for September 15th to get an update as to when this curriculum guide will come to Instructional Council
  • They will pilot during the second semester of the 2009-2010 school-year

Fine Arts – Grade 5-12 Band

  • This curriculum guide will be presented at the Instructional Council meeting on November 17th
  • They will pilot during the second semester of the 2009-2010 school-year
  1. Curriculum Review– Katie Bray

High School Business

  • The high school Business curriculum group has made a request to change course titles and content for the 2010—2011 High School Course Listing Book
  • Instructional Council is requesting this not be done until the state content standards have been approved by the State Board of Education
  • State content standards for Business had not been approved by the State Board of Education as of August 25, 2009, hopefully by December 2009
  • A meeting has been scheduled with this group

High School World Languages

  • The process will start for updating their curriculum guide

Secondary Technology Education

  • State content standards are in the process of being revised and will need to be approved by the State Board of Education
  • The process will start for updating their curriculum guides at the middle school and high school levels as soon as the state approves the content standards
  1. Proposed Graduation Requirements – Katie Bray, John Julius, Deb Steele

Discussion:

  • On the information that was included with the agenda on the proposed graduation requirements from State Secretary of Education Thomas Oster
  • Standard Pathway of the current graduation requirements has been discontinued due to a change in the state statute
  • Students can no longer be put on the Standard Pathway for graduation
  • The immediate need is to work with the current Seniors, and possibly current Juniors, who are on the Standard Pathway to guarantee that they will graduate with their class, this will be done on a one-to-one basis with the student and their parents
  • Rapid City Area Schools’ students are very competitive in at the post- secondary education level

Suggestions / Recommendations:

  • State is working on guidelines for current Seniors and Juniors, on the standard pathway, and their parents regarding graduation

Next Instructional Council meeting will be scheduled for September 22, 2009, 4pm, CSAC, 1st Floor Community Room.
