Explanatory notes

1Definitions

System software means software employed by the computer system rather than end-users e.g. operating systems.

Application software means software operated by end-users rather than the computer system itself e.g. word processing.

Peripherals refer to input, output, and storage devices e.g. monitors, keyboards, printers, modems, scanners, external hard disks, optical drives, accessory cards.
Single-user means an operating system that is only usable by one person at a time.

2Performance of all outcomes is to be carried out in accordance with organisation standards and procedures. Organisation standards and procedures may include – quality assurance, documentation, security, communication, project timeframes, cost or cost estimate, health and safety, personal behaviour.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Plan the assembly of a single-user personal computer and peripherals.

Evidence requirements

1.1A review of the computer system specification identifies and explains the feasibility of the specification.

1.2The plan estimates the effort, duration, and resources required for the assembly.

1.3A review procedure is adopted which ensures the final outcome meets user requirements.

1.4The assembly environment conforms to the manufacturer guidelines.

1.5The resources required to complete the assembly are available at the assembly site and are in working order.

Outcome 2

Assemble a single-user personal computer and peripherals from modules.

Evidence requirements

2.1The hardware is assembled according to the manufacturer guidelines and assembly specifications.

2.2The hardware completes the manufacturer’s diagnostic tests free of errors.

2.3System and application software are customised and configured according to the assembly specifications.

Outcome 3

Test single-user personal computers and peripherals.

Evidence requirements

3.1Testing is completed according to the assembly specifications.

3.2The testing procedure meets the manufacturer guidelines.

3.3The test results are recorded according to organisation requirements.

3.4The system software communicates with the hardware modules in accordance with the manufacturer guidelines and assembly specifications.

Outcome 4

Dispatch single-user personal computers and peripherals.

Evidence requirements

4.1The units are packaged according to the manufacturer guidelines and the assembly specifications.

4.2Documentation is completed according to the manufacturer guidelines and organisation requirements.

4.3Units are forwarded according to the assembly specification.
