60 percent of nurses and midwivesare ahead of the revalidation deadline

With two weeks to go, more than 60 percent of nurses and midwives who are due to revalidate in April have either started or completed their applications. Also, nearly a quarter of nurses and midwives who are due to revalidate in May have already started their applications.

The NMC is reminding everyone to get ahead of the game and not leave their revalidation until the last minute. Nurses and midwives are telling us that revalidating is simple and straightforward.

One nurse said:

“I think it is a positive thing for nurses to revalidate as it opens up discussion. It also makes us more aware of what we naturally do in work, daily. My advice to my fellow colleagues is: do not leave it to the last minute.”

NMC Chief Executive and Registrar, Jackie Smith, said:

“It’s encouraging to see that so many nurses and midwives from the first group to revalidate have already completed their applications. We know from the feedback we’ve had that nurses and midwives believe revalidation is do-able and the tools we have put in place to support them are really useful and easy to use.

“Nearly all those due to renew in April now have an NMC Online account, which they will need to submit their applications.

“The main thing is to make sure you gather all your information and know exactly what is being asked of you by reading the guidance so you can submit on time.”

The NMC is speaking at a number of conferences and events for nurses and midwives to help them understand the new process. We are also contacting individual nurses and midwives with revalidation date reminders and supplementary information for those due to revalidate this year.

3The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the independent professional regulator for nurses and midwives in the UK. We exist to protect the public. We do this by maintaining the register of qualified nurses and midwives and setting standards of education, training, conduct and performance. We make sure that nurses and midwives keep their skills and knowledge up to date through a regular revalidation process. If concerns are raised about the standards of a registered nurse or midwife, we have a duty to investigate and, where necessary, take action to protect the public.

4Revalidation builds on the previous Prep requirements, and is theprocess that all nurses and midwives will have to go through to allowthem to maintain their registration with the NMC. It demonstrates nurses and midwives' continued ability to practise safely and effectively. For a step by step guide to revalidation see our dedicated website.

5Figures are based on the group of nurses and midwives with an April revalidation date: approx. 15,800 people, and the group with a May revalidation date: approx. 12,500 people.
