Dear Colleague,

Re: Primary Schools Mini-Olympics

Wednesday 9th July

Please find enclosed information regarding the Mendip Primary Schools Mini-Olympics 2003, together with a list of all next year’s Athletics and Swimming fixtures.

This year’s event will be held at Millfield School track on Wednesday 9th July, starting at 1.00 pm. Each school will represent a country and wear that county’s flag on their T-shirts. The format will be similar to last year (please see attached sheet). Full details will be forwarded with confirmation of receipt of your entry.

Three trophies will be awarded - the usual Lower School and Upper School trophies plus the trophy awarded to the overall winner in the Small Schools. There will also be medals awarded to the winners of each individual event and the winning relay teams.

Teams may be as small or large as you wish. However, only one child per event, with a maximum of three events plus relay per child. Please note that as long jump and throwing will run concurrently you may not use the same competitor for both.

Please let me know your intention to participate by sending a £15 cheque payable to Mendip District Council and the country of your choice, plus one alternative, to reach me by Friday 30th May. Priority will be given to schools retaining their choice from last year. Confirmation of your entry and country, together with timetable and team declaration sheets will be sent out during the half term break.

Last year’s event was a tremendous success with a total of 15 schools and 300 children taking part, and was great fun for everyone involved. I understand the pressures you are all under towards the end of term – but please do try to come along, I know the children all appreciated your efforts. I look forward to seeing you on the 9th.

I hope to hear from you soon. If you need to contact me for any reason I can be reached 01749 675100 (evenings) or 01749 682295 (daytime). Alternately, a message can be left with the school secretary at St Benedict’s Junior School for Mrs Hoogesteger, who will again be helping out with the organisation. Further details, and full results, will be posted on the internet at by clicking the “Junior Athletics” link.

I have also enclosed details of three open athletics events being organised by Wells City Harriers, Mendip’s local athletics club. Please make your children aware of them – they may find them as useful practice for the Mini-Olympics competition.

Yours sincerely,

Ian HumphreysJ.E.Denise Hoogesteger
