4. You have Independent Practice and Problem Solving (pp. 41-42) - may want to do a few of both sections.
5. You have a Quick Check Master to assess students' understanding. Then at the bottom of
p. 43A, you have a Prescription for Differentiated Instruction using the options on the top of
p. 43B.
SummarizingStrategy:Have students answer the following problem in their journal - Do you think the difference of 1.4 - 0.85 is less than one or greater than one? Explain.
Homework: Teacher choice or assign Reteaching, Practice or Enrichment Master.
Wednesday
Materials:
- Journals
- Week 18 - Day 3 Daily Spiral Review (Resource Box)
- Base Ten Blocks or Place Value Disks (Flipcharts available in Resource Box)
In this lesson -
1) Students will review subtracting decimals in tenths and hundredths using models and place value strategies.
Daily Spiral Review: Complete Week 18 - Day 3 Daily Spiral Review (Resource Box).
Activating Strategy: Show Learn Zillion Video at
TeachingStrategies:
1. Open up with an application problem - A.J. rode his bicycle 2.35 miles in the morning and then 1.13 miles in the afternoon. Use a model to show how many more miles
A. J. rode in the morning then he did in the afternoon.
- Review that 2.35 = 2 wholes (ones) + 3 tenths + 5 hundredths and
1.13 = 1 whole (one) + 1 tenth + 3 hundredths.
- Discuss possible solutions. STRESS to students to always estimate first so that they can tell if their answer makes sense.
- Estimation - Students may say that their answer will be around 1. It is very important to do this first.
- Possible solutions -

A.J. rode his bicycle 1.22 more miles in the morning than he did in the afternoon.
(This answer makes sense because of my previous estimate.)
2. Give students many more problems to practice with. Students may use real manipulatives like base ten blocks or place value disks, or they may draw them (pictorial representation), or they may have an understanding of place value (like the chart above) and not need the models.
SummarizingStrategy:Answer the following problem in your journal - Mrs. Garcia has a length of wire that is 22.7 m long. She has another length of wire that is 15.33 m long. How much longer is the one wire than the other? Use any method to decide, but show your work or explanation.
Homework: Teacher Choice or use something from Envision Lesson 2-4 that students did not use.
Thursday
Materials:
- Journals
- Week 18 - Day 4 Daily Spiral Review (Resource Box)
- Math-Aids.Com Worksheet and Answer Key (Resource Box)
In this lesson -
1) Students will review subtracting decimals in tenths and hundredths using models and place value strategies. Students will review counting up using a number line or using a tape diagram to solve problems, but this time with decimals.
Daily Spiral Review: Complete Week 18 - Day 4 Daily Spiral Review (Resource Box).
TeachingStrategies:
1. Review counting up using a number line with subtraction of whole numbers.
Ex: 1 - 373 - 146 = _____. Use a number line to count up -
373 - 146 = 100 + 100 + 10 + 10 + 4 + 3 = 227
+100 +100 +10 +10 +4 +3
146 246 346 356 366 370 373
2. Students may choose to use a number line as a model to subtract decimals. They will think addition when solving the subtraction problem.
Show video - The problem is 3.18 - 2.06. Estimate first and then solve.
Teachers - Have students discuss their way to use a number line to solve this problem. They may solve it like they do on the video. (Thinking what can I add to 2.06 to get 3.18. That will be the difference of 3.18 and 2.06.)
May add .12 first and then 1 whole to get to 3.18 so my answer is 1.12.
+.12 + 1
2.06 2.18 3.18
Or students may think of solving it this way -
May add 1 whole first and then .12 to get to 3.18 so my answer is 1.12.
+ 1+.12
2.06 3.06 3.18
THE KEY is to think addition when solving a subtraction problem. That is part of the standard which says:
CC Standard 5.NBT.7 - Add and subtract decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction ...
3. Teachers - Use your discretion about showing students the tape diagram a s a model, but it is an option also.
Example: 4 - 0.3
3 tenths subtracted from 4 wholes. One of the wholes must be divided into tenths.
The solution is 3 and 7/10 or 3.7.
4. Have students practice more problems.
SummarizingStrategy:In your journal, explain whether or not Chris correctly solved this problem and explain or model how you know - Christopher went to the mall and bought a pair of jeans for $25.32 and a shirt of $15.21. He told his mother that he spent $10.01 more for the jeans than he spent on the shirt.
Homework:Teacher Choice or Math-Aids.Com Worksheet (Resource Box) - allow students to choose any 8 out of the 12 problems to solve.
Friday
Materials:
- Journals
- Week 18 - Weekly Assessment (Resource Box)
- Base Ten Blocks or Place Value Disks (Flipcharts available in Resource Box)
- Subtracting Decimals - Horizontally (Resource Box)
- Dads Worksheets (Resource Box)
In this lesson -
1) Students will subtract decimals that involve trading (borrowing) with models or place value strategies.
Spiral Weekly Assessment: Complete Weekly Assessment for Week 18(Resource Box).
TeachingStrategies: Students have been solving subtraction problems that involve trading or borrowing, but today make sure that students have that connection between the model and the place value chart.
Remember that you may usethe Base Ten Blocks Flipchart to demonstrate the trading part.
1. Open up with an application problem.Maggierode her bicycle 2.31 miles in the morning and then 1.27 miles in the afternoon. Use a model to show how many more miles
Maggie rode in the morning then she did in the afternoon.
1st step - Draw what 2.31 looks like.
2nd step -
You have to remove 1 whole, 2 tenths, and 7 hundredths from the model, but the problem is that you do not have enough hundredths to do that. Ask students for ideas about what to do.
(Trade out a tenth for 10 hundredths and you will now have 11 hundredths.)
There should be 1 whole and 4 hundredths left so your answer is 1.04.
DECIMAL PLACE VALUE CHART
Ones Tenths Hundredths
23 (2) (1/100 + 1/10 (10/100) = 11/100)
- 127

2. Have students do another problem that involves trading, but this time trading out ones and tenths.
Application Problem - Nyesha got a great buy on two DVD's at a store that was going out of business. She paid $2.65 for one DVD and $1.79 for the other DVD. How much more did the more expensive DVD cost than the cheaper DVD?
Classwork: Teacher Choice or Worksheets
- Subtracting Decimals - Horizontally (Resource Box)
- Dads Worksheets (Resource Box)
Talk with students about this before assigning classwork -
- 88.46 - 85.52 = ? - Students do not need to draw 88 wholes, but can students talk through that they need to borrow one whole from the 88 and make it 87. Then they can take the 1 whole and add it to the 4/10 (1 whole = 10/10 + 4/10 = 14/10). Then they can subtract 5 tenths from 14 tenths.
