  1. Review Maxwell’s 5 Levels of Leadership:The Learner will: understand that Leaders have influence in all directions, with their superiors, with their peers and with their subordinates.
  2. How to fulfill the role of the leader.
  3. How to raise your effectiveness and improve your performance.
  4. How to extend your influence beyond your immediate reach and time.
  5. A roadmap for taking the journey to the highest level of leadership.
  1. THE SUMMARY IN BRIEF: True leadership isn’t a matter of having a certain job or title. In fact, being chosen for a position is only the first of the five levels every effective leader achieves. To become more than “the boss” people follow only because they are required to, you have to master the ability to invest in and inspire people. To grow further in your role, you must achieve results and build a team that produces.
  2. The 5 Levels of Leadership are:
  3. Position. People follow because they have to.
  4. Permission. People follow because they want to.
  5. Production. People follow because of what you have done for the organization.
  6. People Development. People follow because of what you have done for them personally.
  7. Pinnacle. People follow because of who you are and what you represent.
  1. Assessment:
  2. Review 5 Levels of Leadership Participants Guide
  1. You Can Have a Leadership Game Plan for your Life:The Learner will: Analyze how leadership work.

2.1 Identify a game plan for learning how to become a leader. .

  1. You Can Learn Practical Leadership Tools. (pg. 3) The 5 Levels of Leadership help leaders become stronger and develop greater depth. The concept is tested and proven. In addition, it offers several other benefits:
  2. The 5 Levels of Leadership Provides a Clear Picture of Leadership. (pg. 3)
  3. How do people get a handle on leadership? For those who are not naturally gifted for it, leadership can be a mystery.
  4. The 5 Levels of Leadership Defines Leading as a Verb, Not a Noun. (pg. 4)
  5. Leadership is a process, not a position. Leadership deals with people and their dynamics, which are continually changing.
  6. The 5 Levels of Leadership Breaks Down Leading into Understandable Steps. (pg. 4)
  7. The subject of leadership can be overwhelming and confusing. Where does leadership start? What should we do first? What processes should we use? How can we gain influence with others? How can we develop a productive team?
  8. The 5 Levels of Leadership Provides a Clear Game Plan for Leadership Development. (pg. 4)
  9. Good leadership isn’t about advancing yourself. It’s about advancing your team. The 5 Levels of Leadership provides clear steps for leadership growth.
  10. The 5 Levels of Leadership Aligns Leadership Practices, Principles and Values. (pg. 5)
  11. A practice is an action that may work in one situation but not necessarily in another. A principle is an external truth that is as reliable as a physical law.
  1. Assessment:
  2. Complete the following in 5 Levels of Leadership Participant’s Guide Workbook.
  3. Pg. 9-10
  4. Pg. 11-16
  5. Complete the Leadership Assessment.
  1. Position Leadership:The Learner will: Examine the three types of leadership leading up, across and down.

3.1 Describes the key element in this Level of Leadership.

3.2 Summarize the Upside of Position.

3.3 Critique The Laws of Leadership at the Position Level even practical issues that need to be considered in order to move from management to leadership.

  1. Level 1: Position. (pg. 7): Position is the starting place for every level of leadership. It is the bottom floor and the foundation upon which leadership must be built. Real influence must be developed upon that foundation.
  2. When a person receives a leadership position, it’s usually because someone in authority saw talent and potential in that person. And with that title and position come some rights and a degree of authority to lead others. Position is a good starting place. And like every level of leadership, it has its upsides and downsides.
  3. The Upside of Position (pg. 41) If you are new to leadership and you receive a position, then there are things to celebrate.
  4. A Leadership Position Is Usually Given to People Because They Have Leadership Potential. (pg. 41)
  5. It usually means that the person in authority believes that the new leader has some degree of potential for leading.
  6. 2. A Leadership Position Means Authority Is Recognized. (pg. 42)
  7. When an individual receives a position and title, some level of authority or power usually comes with them. Often, in the beginning, that power is very limited, but that’s OK because most leaders need to prove themselves with little before being given much.
  8. A Leadership Position Is an Invitation to Grow as a Leader. (pg. 43)
  9. There should always be a relationship between receiving a leadership position and fulfilling the requirements demanded by it. One of the main requirements is personal growth.
  10. A Leadership Position Allows Potential Leaders to Shape and Define Their Leadership. (pg.44)
  11. The greatest upside potential for people invited to take a leadership position is that it affords them the opportunity to decide what kind of leader they want to be. The position they receive may be defined, but they are not.
  1. The Laws of Leadership at the Position Level (pg. 70)
  2. The Law of the Lid: Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness (pg. 70)
  3. The Law of Process: Leadership develops daily, not in a day ( pg. 71)
  4. The Law of Navigation: Anyone can steer the ship, but it takes a leader to chart the course (pg. 71)
  1. Assessment:
  2. Complete the following in 5 Levels of Leadership Participant’s Guide Workbook.
  3. Pg.21-29
  4. Pg. 33-38
  1. Permission Leadership: The Learner will: Analyze that leadership across depends critically on the ability to form good relationships.

4.1 Outline the first step to leadership

4.2 Define Leadership

4.3 Examine Best Behaviors of Level 2 Leadership

4.4Critique The Laws of Leadership at the Permission Level.

  1. Level 2: Permission (pg. 83):
  2. Making the shift from Position to Permission brings a person’s first real step into leadership.
  3. Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.
  4. Leaders who rely on their positions to move people rarely develop influence with them. If their subordinates do what they are asked, it’s usually because they think they have to — to receive their pay, keep their jobs, prevent being reprimanded and so on. In contrast, when a leader learns to function on the Permission level, everything changes. People do more than merely comply with orders. They actually start to follow.
  5. Leader begins to influence people with relationship, not just position.
  6. Building relationships develops a foundation for effectively leading others. It also starts to break down organizational silos as people connect across the lines between their job descriptions or departments.
  7. 1) Caring - Take an Interest in People. (pg. 162)
  8. People always move towards someone who increases them and away from anyone who decreases them.
  9. When people feel liked, cared for, included, valued and trusted, they begin to work together with their leader and each other. And that can change the entire working environment.
  1. Best Behaviors on Level 2? How can you make the most of the opportunity to develop as a relational leader?
  2. 1. Connect with Yourself Before Trying to Connect with Others. (pg. 105)
  3. One of the secrets of connecting with people and building relationships is knowing and liking yourself
  4. 2. Develop a People-Oriented Leadership Style. (pg. 107)
  5. Permission leaders don’t rely on rules to lead people. They don’t depend on systems. And they never try to rule with a stick.
  6. They listen, learn and then lead. They develop relationships. They have more than an open-door policy — they know the door swings both ways. They go through it and get out among their people to connect.
  7. 3. Practice the Golden Rule. (pg. 108)
  8. Treat others as you want others to treat you.
  9. 4. Become the Chief Encourager of Your Team. (pg. 110)
  10. If the person is breathing they need a pat on the back!
  11. 5. Strike a Balance Between Care and Candor. (pg. 111)
  12. Care without candor creates dysfunctional relationships. Candor without care creates distant relationships. But care balanced with candor creates developing relationships.
  13. The Laws of Leadership at the Permission Level. (pg. 118)
  14. The Law of Influence: The true measure of leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less. (pg. 118)
  15. The Law of Addition: Leaders add value by serving others. (pg. 118)
  16. The Law of Solid Ground: Trust is the foundation of leadership. (pg. 119)
  17. The Law of Magnetism: Who you are is who you attract. (pg. 119)
  18. The Law of Connection: Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand. (pg. 120)
  19. The Law of Buy In: People buy into the leader, then the vision. (pg. 120)
  1. Assessment:
  2. Complete the following in 5 Levels of Leadership Participant’s Guide Workbook.
  3. Pg.43-49
  4. Pg. 53-63
  5. Complete 7 Life Languages Assessments.
  1. Production Leadership: The Learner will: Analyze how good leaders always make things happen. They get results.

5.1 Identify the how production separates true leaders from those who merely occupy leadership positions.

5.2Analyze The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork.

5.3Examine The Laws of Leadership at the Production Level.

  1. Level 3: Production. (pg. 133) The Production level is where leadership really takes off and shifts into another gear. Production qualifies and separates true leaders from people who merely occupy leadership positions. If you desire to go to higher levels of leadership, you simply have to produce. There is no other way around it.
  2. Best Behaviors on Level 3 (pg. 151)Building a winning team requires understanding of these principles. Whatever your goal or project, you need to add value and invest in your team so the end product benefits from more ideas, energy, resources, and perspectives.
  3. The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork: Embrace Them and Empower Your TeamTo achieve great things, you need a team
  4. The Law of Significance (pg. 156): One is too small a number to achieve greatness.
  5. The Law of the Big Picture (pg. 157): The goal is more important than the role. Leaders can create a more unified team by seeing the big picture, effectively communicating the vision to the team, providing the needed resources, and hiring the right players.
  6. The Law of the Niche (pg. 157): All players have a place where they add the most value. Essentially, when the right team member is in the right place, everyone benefits.
  7. The Law of Mount Everest (pg. 156): As the challenge escalates, the need for teamwork elevates. Focus on the team and the dream should take care of itself.
  8. The Law of the Chain (pg. 158): The strength of the team is impacted by its weakest link.
  9. The Law of the Catalyst (pg. 156): Winning teams have players who make things happen.
  10. The Law of the Compass (pg. 157): A team that embraces a vision becomes focused, energized, and confident. It knows where it's headed and why it's going there.
  11. The Law of The Bad Apple (pg. 158): Rotten attitudes ruin a team. The first place to start is with your-self.
  12. The Law of Count ability (pg. 158): Teammates must be able to count on each other when it counts. Is your integrity unquestionable?
  13. The Law of the Price Tag (pg. 157): The team fails to reach its potential when it fails to pay the price. Sacrifice, time commitment, personal development, and unselfishness are part of the price we pay for team success.
  14. The Law of the Scoreboard (pg. 158): The team can make adjustments when it knows where it stands. The scoreboard is essential to evaluating performance at any given time, and is vital to decision-making.
  15. The Law of the Bench (pg. 156): Great teams have great depth. Any team that wants to excel must have good substitutes as well as starters.
  16. The Law of Identity: (pg. 160) Shared values define the team. The type of values you choose for the team will attract the type of members you need. Values give the team a unique identity to its members, potential recruits, clients, and the public. Values must be constantly stated and restated, practiced, and institutionalized.
  17. The Law of Communication (pg. 160): Interaction fuels action. Effective teams have teammates who are constantly talking, and listening to each other.
  18. The Law of the Edge (pg. 160): The difference between two equally talented teams is leadership. A good leader can bring a team to success, provided values; work ethic and vision are in place.
  19. The Law of High Morale (pg. 160): When you're winning, nothing hurts. When a team has high morale, it can deal with whatever circumstances are thrown at it.
  20. The Law of Dividends (pg. 156): Investing in the team compounds over time. Make the decision to build a team, and decide who among the team are worth developing
