In general, this year weather conditions were moderate for the development of insect pests of Brassicas except at FZB, KAN, SGN, PNT, LDH, SHL and DOL centres.

5.1 Screening of advanced breeding germplasm against mustard aphid

One hundred seventy three strains (IVT) were evaluated including susceptible/tolerant checks. Aphid pressure was very low at Faizabad, Kanpur, Sriganganagar, Pantnagar, Ludhiana, Dholi and Shillongani centres while moderate to severe at Hisar, Bharatpur, SK Nagar, Navgaon, New Delhi and Berhampore. Entries DRMR HJ 4109 (Hybrid), RSPN 29, (Brassica juncea); NUDB 26-11 (B. napus), RTM 1375, RTM 1415, RTM 1212, TMB 2031, TMB 2032, RTM 314, RTM 2002 and T 27 (E. sativa) were found promising having the AAII < 1(Table 5.1A). Twenty eight entries (AVT1 & AVT2) were screened for aphid resistance and none of the entry was found to have the AAII < 1 (Table 5.1B). Forty two entries (Promising lines of last year) were evaluated for mustard aphid resistance and all the entries were found to have AAII < 2 (Table 5.1C).

5.2Assessment of yield losses due to insect pests in Brassica crops

The highest yield losses were observed in BSH 1 at Bharatpur (34.7%), Hisar (9.2%), Kanpur (84.3%), SK Nagar (44.0%), Berhampore (59.1%), and New Delhi (27.3%) but at Ludhiana NRCDR 2 (20.0), Navgaon RRN 505 (23.1%), Dholi Pusa Bold (14.1%) suffered higher yield loss due to insect pests (Table 5.2).

5.3 Population dynamics of various insect-pests on Brassica crops

(A) Incidence of various insect-pests in Brassicas

At Bharatpur, high population of mustard aphid was recorded during 7th to 11th std. week in all the 6 varieties under timely sown and late sown condition. Moderate to high population of painted bug was observed from 46th to 50th std. week and very high population was observed from 8th to 14th std. week on all the six entries in both timely and late sown conditions. High population of leaf miner was also observed during 5th-12th std. week. Maximum visits of honey bee were observed in timely sown crop in 6th to 9th std. week except DLSC 2 and in late sown crop during 8th to 10th std. week. The population of predator coccinella was recorded higher during 6th to 11th Std. week (Table 5.3.1 A,B,C,D&E). At Hisar, moderate aphid population was recorded with peak during 8th std. week. The aphid disappeared after 12th std. week. Moderate to high painted bug population (0.1-3.6 bug/meter row) was observed from 46th to 1st std. week and again from 7th to 12th std. week on RH 30 and BSH 1. Low to moderate cabbage caterpillar population was found during 6th to 12th std. week. The low population of coccinelllids was recorded between 6th to 12th std. week (Table 5.3.2). At Kanpur, moderate aphid population was recorded during 2nd to 8th std. week with peak in 6th std. week in most of the entries. Negligible population of painted bug and saw fly was observed. The very low population of coccinellids (0.3-1.3 coccinellid/plant) were also recorded (Table 5.3.3 ). At Ludhiana, low aphid population was recorded in timely and late sown crop. High population of cabbage caterpillar was reported with peak mostly during 10th to 14th std. week in late sown Brassicas with highest population (35.7 larvae/plant) in PC 5 (Table 5.3.4 A, B &C). At Shillongani, peak population of mustard aphid was recorded in 8th std. week, sawfly 3rd std. week, cutworm in 49th std. week, flea beetle in 8th std. week, leaf webber in 12th std. week, cabbage caterpillar in 10th std. week, DBM 8th std week and coccinellid in 8th std. week (Table 5.3.5 A&B). At Sriganganagar, very low population of mustard aphid was recorded in timely however, in late sown condition low population with peak in 11th std. week. Very high population of painted was found in timely sown condition in 48th to 50th std. week. Peak population of coccinellids was recorded in 12th std. week in late sown condition (Table 5.3.6 A,B&C). At SK Nagar, aphid population was recorded from 50th to 12th std. week in timely and late sown crop (Table 5.3.7). At Berhampore, low aphid population was recorded during 3rd to 9th std. week with peak in 6th std. week in most of the entries under timely and late sown condition The population of mustard saw fly, diamond back moth and flea beetle was also recorded (Table 5.3.8 A&B). At Dholi, Very low population of mustard aphid was recorded (Table 5.3.9 ). At Pantnagar, moderate to high population of mustard aphid was recorded during 4th to 10th std.week in BSH-1, YST-151, Varuna, GSC 6, Taramira, B. carinata, B. alba and B. nigra. (Table 5.3.10).

5.3.(B) Monitoring of alate mustard aphids on yellow sticky traps

The alate aphid population was recorded by eight centers. At Bharatpur, alate mustard aphid was observed from 47th std. to 15th std. week with peak (96.3 aphids/trap) in 9th std. week and disappeared during 16th std. week. At Berhampore, alate mustard aphid was observed from 50th to 10th std. week with peak (224.6 aphids/trap) during 8th std. week and disappeared in 10th std. week. At Hisar, alate aphid population appeared during 5th std. week and reached its peak in 9th std. week (112.0 aphid/trap) and disappeared after 12th std. week. At S.K. Nagar, alate mustard aphid appeared during 2nd std. week and reached its peak (2720.0 aphids/trap) during 9th std. week and disappeared during 13th std. week. At Ludhiana, alate aphid appeared as early as in 41nd std. week and remained active up to 16th std. week with peak (721.2 aphids/trap) in 11th std. week. At Pantnagar, the alate aphid appeared in 52nd std. week and peaked in the 11th std. week (260.0 aphids/trap) and disappeared during15th std. week. At Sriganganagar, alate mustard aphid was observed from 49th std. to 15th std. week with the peak (128.0 aphids/trap) during 12th std. week. At New Delhi, alate mustard aphid appeared during 5th std. week and peaked (607.0 aphids/trap) during 11th std. week and disappeared during 13th std. week. At Kanpur, alate mustard aphid appeared during 4th std. week and peaked (21.6 aphids/trap) during 10th std. week and disappeared during 11th std. week. (Table 5.3.11)

5.4 Bio-efficacy of newer insecticides against mustard aphid

Significant higher seed yield and good aphid control was observed under the insecticidal treatments. Dimethoate 30 EC @ 1 ml/L was found most effective and provided maximum yield at Bharatpur, Shillongani and Berhampur (Table 5.4) however, clothianidine 50 WDP @ 0.3g/L at Ludhiana and Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @20g ai/ha at Hisar and Kanpur. The higher IBCR was found in Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @20g ai/ha (Bharatpur, Hisar and Kanpur), dimethoate 30 EC @ 300g ai/ha (Berhampur and SK Nagar) and Thiamethoxam 25WG @ 25g ai/ha at New Delhi.

5.5 Efficacy of chemical insecticides and botanicals against painted bug in Indian mustard

Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @20g ai/ha/ 0.25ml per litre of water was found effective against painted bug at Bharatpur and Hisar with higher IBCR. (Table 5.5).

5.6 Survey and surveillance of insect pests and their natural enemies

Survey and surveillance of insect pests was conducted at SK Nagar, Hisar Dholi, Berhampore and Kanpur. Mustard aphid, painted bug, sawfly, diamond back moth, flea beetle and leaf miner and predator coccinella were reported from fields (Table 5.6.1-4).
