4th Grade, Informational Exemplar 3-3-2

Hello! I’m news reporter Damon. Today, I’m going to talk about how the government plans to manage the size of herds of wild horses. As you all probably already know, wild horses are a big part of American history. It would be terrible if a herd go too big. If a herd gets too big there wouldn’t be enough food for all of the horses to share. Some horses might get sick if that happens. Some horses might even die. To prevent that from happening the United States Bureau Management maintains horses on federal land. “BLM keeps track of each herd’s size, and if a herd gets too large the BLM will capture some horses and put them up for adoption.” as stated in article Wild Horses. This means the government is trying to protect the health of the horses. Some people don’t agree with this system. Wild horse supporters think this system is unfair, but the government insists that this system is necessary. Still, that does not convince wild horse supporters. Lately, it’s been hard for the government to sell the horses because BLM has compition. Some people are selling tame horses at cheaper prices than the government’s prices. Because of that not many people buy the government’s horses anymore. In fact, in 2005 the government found twice as many homes for horses than it did this year. The government has a group of people who work for them. They give advice about what to do with the horses. The group said the government was holding more than it could handle. “Horse supporters say the solution is for the government to balance horses, cattle, and sheep.” According to the article Wild Horses. The government is thinking about doing this. Next month, on this same channel, I will do a report on the wild horse problem. That will determine what to do with the horses. So tune in next month if you want to find out!!!

Notes:

·  The student wrote the paper as one paragraph, which distracts from the overall organizational structure.

·  The student attempted to use an interesting introduction and conclusion by writing from the perspective of a news reporter. While the introduction specifically references the “how” portion of the prompt, it only vaguely references the “why” portion of the prompt.

·  A majority of the evidence taken directly from the source materials or is paraphrased.

·  Some elaboration is provided- “This means the government is trying to protect the health of the horses.” “Lately, it’s been hard for the government to sell the horses because BLM has compition.”
