Title / Hand assemble components within a manufacturing environment

Purpose / This unit standard is for people who are currently working in manufacturing assembly which is essentially manual in nature, and is applicable over a wide range of contexts and/or worksites.
People credited with this unit standard are able to hand assemble components within a manufacturing environment.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the: Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Resource Management Act 1991; Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996and any subsequent amendments.

2Definitions

Hand assemble– the ability to hand assemble a limited number of components, specified in job sheets, in a manufacturing environment. It involves minimal use of jigs, fixtures, and tools.

Industry practice– safe and sound trade practices generally accepted by competent persons within the manufacturing industry.

Worksite procedures – documents that include: worksite rules, codes, and practices; equipment operating instructions; documented quality management systems; and health and safety requirements.

3Assessment information

–All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite safety procedures (where these exceed the codes) for personal, product, and worksite safety), and must also meet the obligations required under current legislation.

–Competence is to be demonstrated on threeoccasions of hand assembling components within a manufacturing environment.

4Range

Components may include but are not limited to – wiring, plastic parts, metal parts, rubber parts;

assemblymay include but is not limited to – connecting hoses, fitting switches, taping, wiring, plugging wiring onto equipment, fitting seals.

Outcome 1

Hand assemble components within a manufacturing environment.

Evidence requirements

1.1Process method and quality requirements are verified against job specifications and are in accordance with worksite procedures.

1.2Materials required are verified to meet task requirements and specifications.

1.3Assembly sequence conforms to job specification and is in accordance with industry practice.

1.4Where required, fastenings used conform to job specification and are installed in accordance with industry practice.

1.5Assembly is checked for conformity with quality standards.

1.6Non-conforming product is sorted and processed in accordance with worksite procedures.

1.7Non-conforming product is handled and stored in accordance with worksite procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – placed on hold, reworked, disposed of.

1.8Where packaging is required, it is carried out without damage to components in accordance with worksite procedures.

1.9Recording and/or reporting is carried out in accordance with worksite procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – hard copy and/or electronic recording and/or reporting.

1.10Product, production, and equipment terminology is used in accordance with industry practice.
