Dear Family Member,

It’s that time again – standardized testing begins next Tuesday morning. We will be administering the TCAP: TN READY Comprehensive Assessment April 17-25, 2018 to all students in grades 5 through 8. You play an essential part in helping students give their best performance on this important test. As you know, we have been busy preparing and reinforcing the skills necessary for students to demonstrate their learning. Even though this assessment is a snapshot —one single perspective – it is important that our students have every advantage to do their very best. There are many ways in which you can help your child put his/her best foot forward.

The night before the test:

1. Make sure your child goes to bed on time so he or she is well-rested.

2. Keep your routine as normal as possible. Plan ahead to avoid conflicts on the morning of the test.

3. Be positive and confident in the fact that you know your child will do his/her best.

The morning of the test:

1. Get up a few minutes early to avoid rushing and make sure your child arrives at school on time.

2. Have your child eat a nutritious breakfast.

3. The most important thing you can do right before the test is to build confidence about doing his/her very best.

After the test:

1. Talk to your child about the test; discuss what was easy and what was hard, and what was learned.

2. Explain that performance on a test does not define him or her as a person. It is just one opportunity to demonstrate learning.

As a part of the State Testing Manual, students are not allowed to have electronic devices during testing: If students are found with ANY electronic devices, including but not limited to cell phones, smartphones, smart watches, etc., during testing OR during breaks, their test score may be nullified. The best practice would be for students to leave devices at home or in their lockers on the day of testing. Alternatively, Test Administrators should collect electronic communication devices prior to testing and return them when all students have submitted their tests.

We encourage you to have students leave devices at home if at all possible--otherwise they must be turned in at the beginning of testing each day to test administrators.

At BCMS, if a student does not turn in an electronic device during a testing time, it will result in the “3rd offense” consequence found in the cell phone policy:

●cellular phone is confiscated

●parents are contacted

●cellular phone will be returned to the parent from a central location within the school

●the parent must sign to pick up the phone

●student receives 10 days out-of-school suspension

Testing will begin promptly at 8:35 a.m. It is very important that students arrive at school on time and remain at school for the entire day. Should students arrive after testing has begun, they will remain in the office until testing is completed. If at all possible, please schedule any appointments for days after scheduled testing. Thank you for your continued support. Please understand that attendance is crucial during the days of this testing window.

Sincerely,

Jordan HughesAaron Christian
