4-H Projects and Record Book Forms – 2016 & 2017

Plan the things you would like to do and learn in each project with the help of your leader and/or parents at the beginning of the year.

4-H records are meant to prepare a 4-H member for life as an adult and a citizen. Record keeping helps start the good habits of setting goals, planning, organizing, evaluating and improving communication skills. Records reflect your character and ability to get things done.

To achieve in your club and be eligible for county awards, you must:

1.  Keep accurate and clear records. Record books should not be a scrapbook. The records intend for you to plan ahead at the beginning of the year and to look back and evaluate at the end of the year.

2.  Project records should be for the current project year. (Lifetime Dairy Record Sheet is the only exception.)

3.  Junior Awards go to members in grades 3 – 8 as of January 1 of current year. Senior Awards to members in grade 9 and older as of January 1 of current year.

4.  All records must be the work of the member, whether handwritten, typed or word-processed. The neatest record books do not interchange typing, ink, pencil or ink colors. Lifetime animal records are the only exception. However, all stories can be word processed on a computer. If a member is physically unable to write their records, has special needs, or is ill, a parent can assist, but the words must still be those of the member. A note should be included stating the reason the member couldn’t do their own book.

5.  All blanks on the record sheets should be completed. State either a reason or does not apply or N/A in the space provided. Never leave an empty space on the record sheets.

6.  It is suggested that all record books be TABBED according to project area, as it is easier to find any given project when viewing record book.

Each record book must contain the following pages in the following order:

1.  Front of cover must be completed.

2.  Picture Page (1 per member) front and back must be completed. Copy information from last year’s book and add this years.

3.  My 4-H Activity Program (1 per member). Check all activities you participated in.

4.  Optional: Newspaper clippings and/or pictures of club or county activities, not project work. These must be related to some specific work you (not just your club) have done. Underline or highlight your name and club name.

5.  Optional Community Service Section: This is especially important to include if you are hoping to compete for the overall county youth leadership award as community service is considered an important part of youth leadership. Story &/or photos to show proof of involvement.

6.  Project Pages – Follow the table on the next pages to see what pages are required for each project and what order they are to be placed in your record book for that project. Project areas may be placed in the record book in any order desired. For example, beef may be placed in your record book as the third or sixth project area. They do not need to be in alphabetical or numerical order.
