Harvey Norman 1997 – 2001

Computer Super Stores. Canberra & Dandenong

Proprietor

Harvey Norman Proprietors run their stores on a combination of strict central control and rules. However, they are encouraged to use experimentation and initiative in regard to the on-site day-to-day management. Proprietors are held completely accountable for all aspects of the P&L account and are rewarded with a share of the profits. It is the most successful retail operation in Australia.

Both the Fyshwick and Dandenong stores had very similar problems; they were unprofitable, due to a lack of focus and poor co-ordination of the staff, large stock losses through lax accounting and stealing. Sales performance was patchy as was training, a clear understanding of profitable selling was not understood. The stores were not attractively laid out or customer friendly.

Within six months the stores were trading profitably; this was achieved by training and developing the potential of staff, the introduction of a bonus scheme that increased proportionately based on GP$ achieved. I introduced a strict accounting system and improved the layout of the stores to increase appeal and make theft more difficult. Stock losses fell to a trickle to below average of all stores.

Harvey Norman stores are rated monthly on profits achieved, of the 130 stores Fyshwick and Dandenong fluctuated between 9-12 positions.

Esselte Pty Ltd Sydney 1985 - 1996

VP Asia Pacific

I was originally employed as Managing Director of Australasia becoming VP Asia Pacific in 1990.

Esselte was in 1985 the world’s and Australia’s largest supplier of general stationery. The Australian company had never been profitable. Management focus, co-ordination and controls were negligible. The New Zealand Company was declining.

My brief was to bring control to the companies and improve profits to the company benchmark of 25% ROI.

Achievements

  • Stabilised both companies within six months. Introduced clear goals with accountability, brought system and controls into the daily operations. The result was a small profit in each company in 1985. By 1997 sales had increased to almost 300% and profits some 1,600%.
  • Reorganised and rationalised the factory and warehouse, introduced MRP and TQM techniques. We became the first company in the group to be accredited ISO9000.
  • Distribution improved from an average 14-day supply to 24 hours. We became a benchmark company within the group for productivity improvement and efficiency.
  • Within two years we achieved the corporate guideline of 25% ROI.
  • Negotiated the purchase and incorporation of one of our largest competitors, Hogbin Excelsior.

I was promoted to VP Asia pacific in 1990.

My brief was to develop the Asia Pacific markets while retaining my role as Managing Director, Australasia and restructure the companies to meet the local recession.

Achievements

  • Increased sales within the region by 135% to $192 million, profits rose in the same period by 212%.
