November 1, 2014 / Voice of Democracy (VOD) Scholarship – THEME/ESSAY: “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?” Created in 1947, the Voice of Democracy (VOD) scholarship program is an audio‐essay contest for high school students in grades 9‐12 that annually provides more than $2.3 million in scholarships. The first‐place winner, who competes with all the first‐place VFW Department winners, receives a $30,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Besides competing for the top scholarship prize, as well as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, each VFW Department’s first‐place winner receives an all‐expense‐paid trip to Washington, D.C. (Final postmark to be considered for Ron Brown Scholarship only) / Ron Brown Scholar Program - Established in 1996 by the privately funded CAP Charitable Foundation, the Ron Brown Scholar Program began awarding college scholarships to outstanding African American students to honor the legacy of service of the late Secretary of Commerce Ronald H. Brown. As the first African American to serve in the cabinet as Secretary of Commerce and the first to serve as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Ron Brown was a figure of global prominence, respected for his intelligence, political savvy and leadership. In April of 1996, he died in a tragic plane crash during a trade mission to Eastern Europe. Since 1996, the Ron Brown Scholar Program has evolved to provide Scholars with more than just academic opportunities, fostering both the strong commitment of service and dedication to future leadership that Ron Brown helped embody. The Ron Brown Scholar Program provides Scholars with the financial resources to attend some of the finest colleges and universities in the country. Upon acceptance, Scholars are each awarded $40,000 ($10,000 per year for 4 years) that may be used at the college or university of their choice. Acceptance into the Program means Scholars are also provided with the nurturing and mentorship to succeed and flourish in college and beyond. Check website in early December 2014 / The AIA/AAF Minority Disadvantaged Scholarship – provides assistance to high school graduates, college freshmen, and community college students from a minority and/or financially disadvantaged background who intend to pursue a NAAB-accredited professional degree (5-year BA or BA + MA) in architecture. December 1, 2014 / Air Force ROTC Scholarship – The objective of the Air Force ROTC High School Scholarship Program (HSSP) is to attract and retains high quality individuals whose leadership potential, personal and physical qualities and academics specialties meet USAF accession objectives. Offers are based on merit and not on financial need. 70% of offers are in technical (engineering and scientific) majors and 30% in combined foreign language and non‐technical majors. January 5, 2015 / 2014 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest – The foundation invites US high school students to write an essay on an act of a political courage by a US elected official. Essays must describe how an elected official demonstrated political courage by addressing an issue at the local, state, or national level. Essays can be no more than 1,000 words. GMS will select 1,000 talented students to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. We provide Gates Millennium Scholars with personal and professional development through our leadership programs along with academic support through their college career. January 9, 2015 / APIASF Scholarship Program – The largest provider of scholarships to Asian students, the Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund teams up with corporate sponsors to provide general scholarships to Asian-American students who are interested in pursuing higher education. Students can benefit from a streamlined application process; one application is all you need to apply for the more than ten scholarship opportunities. Most scholarship through the AIPASF will require demonstrated financial need, so make sure that you have completed the FAFSA before you apply. To be eligible for this scholarship program, you must be of Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity; be a citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the United States. Citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau. You must be enrolling in a U.S. accredited college or university in the Fall of 2012. (Other awards in amounts as the judges may determine.) Competition open to all high school seniors who are U. S. citizens and are planning careers of service to the United States in local, state, or federal government. Entrants receiving full four-year scholarships shall be eligible only for one-year special awards. Awards for those entering Armed Forces Colleges are eligible for one-year special awards. January 20, 2015 / Ronald McDonald House Scholarship – Currently enrolled high school seniors who are eligible to enroll and attend an institution of higher learning or vocational/technical school with a complete course of study in the year immediately following graduation may apply for only one RMHC scholarship program. Applications due January 5, 2015 / California Association of Collectors, Inc. – This scholarship will be awarded to California High School seniors for their use as full time students at any accredited public or private college, university or trade school. Scholarship recipients must start attendance within 12 months of the award and show proof of enrollment in a minimum of 12 credit hours. The essay subject is: “Importance of Establishing and Maintaining Good Financial Credit During Your College Years.” Entries must be typed; 12 point font, double spaced, and be between 700 and 1,000 words.
