3rd TERM READING ASSIGNMENT

Objective: Students will build their reading strategy and analysis skills and gain an understanding of argumentative writing as they read a novel of their own choice and compare it to a movie about the same story and prove which is better.

Task #1: Students will choose a novel (minimum of 250 pages) to read on their own. The novel chosen must also have a movie based on the same story. (Ex: Harry Potter series, Twilight series, The Lord of the Rings series, Dear John, The Last Song, The DaVinci Code, Eragon, Pride and Prejudice, etc.) NOTE: The book chosen MAY NOT be one that has been previously read; it must be a new choice.* (Completion of this portion of the assignment will be entered in the Reading portion of the grade.)

* Books not allowed for this assignment include but are not limited to:

·  books read in previous English or reading classes (ex: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, The Outsiders, Diary of Anne Frank, Night, Matilda, etc. You also may NOT read Holes!)

PROPOSAL DUE: JANUARY 27

Task #2: Read the novel:

·  As you read, take notes on the following elements to help keep your focus on these areas:

o  Plot

o  Setting

o  Characterization

o  Theme

o  Point of View

o  Conflict (internal vs. external, etc.)

·  Use the “Elements Analysis Worksheet” to take your notes. Completion of this portion of the assignment will be entered in the Reading portion of the grade.

·  Your notes will be used to write the argumentative paper. Be sure to make note of page numbers so you can cite your source in the final paper.

NOTES DUE: MARCH 9

Task #3: Watch the movie (television shows or “made for TV” movies are not allowed):

·  The same literary elements used in reading the novel will be used as you view the movie. Again, take notes using the “Elements Analysis Worksheet” as you compare the two mediums.

·  You may NOT write “SAME” or draw arrows from information from the book to the movie or vice versa. There are ALWAYS differences!

Task #4: Students will use notes from reading the book and watching the movie to write an argumentative essay.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students will have NOT have time in the school to write/type their essay. Essays will be written in Google Docs and submitted through CANVAS for final evaluation. You will need to make arrangements to complete this portion at home or using school computers. ESSAY MUST BE TYPED AND PROCESSED THROUGH CANVAS TO RECEIVE CREDIT!

FINAL DRAFT DUE: MARCH 18 (Essays worked on after 2:00 pm will be marked LATE.) NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED AS YOU’VE KNOWN ABOUT THIS ALL TERM!

Scores will be given in Reading, and Writing portion of term grade as follows:

Proposal (Reading): 25 points

Notes (Reading): 75 points

Essay (Writing): 100 points
