3RD QUARTER HOMEWORK PROJECT

To extend your knowledge of lakes and rivers, you will research the pros and cons of the Glen Canyon Dam in Northern Arizona! The Glen Canyon Dam, built on the Colorado River, supplies water, electricity and other resources to the people who live near it. But it also has changed the environment in ways that activists feel have caused permanent damage.

Is the Glen Canyon Dam a good thing or a bad thing? YOU explain using claims (what you know), evidence (how you know) reasoning (why the evidence supports the claim)!

  • Five paragraph essay- minimum of five sentences per paragraph

Paragraph 1 – Claim- Introduce the topic of whether or not the Glen Canyon Dam is good for the environment and community and give your claim (your position) on the subject.

Paragraph 2 – Evidence(at least 3 facts) from your research that supports your claim on the pros (positive aspects) or the cons (negative aspects) of the Glen Canyon Dam. Be sure to include your reasoning and explain why the facts support your claim.

Paragraph 3 – Counterclaim- Explain the other side of this controversy.

Paragraph 4 – Evidence (at least three facts) from your research that refutes (or disproves) the counterclaim argument. Be sure to include your reasoning and explain why the evidence supports your claim and not the counterclaim you described in Paragraph 3.

Paragraph 5 – Conclusion/restate the topic and your position on the Glen Canyon Dam.

  • Completed planner (on the back) with your research about the pros and cons of dams in general, and the Glen Canyon Dam specifically. Staple this planner to the back of your essay when you turn it in.
  • Completed essay must be typed, double-spaced, in Times New Roman font withyour name, date and period number in the top right corner. Your spelling and grammar should be correct before handing in!
  • List of websites and/or books used for research recorded on the bottom of the planning page.
  • Parent/guardian signature verifying that your work is in your own words (no copying and pasting!).
