3rd Grade Summer Reading List

The following list was created to give our students and their families ideas for fun and enjoyable books to read throughout the summer. The books in this list fall into the Transitional Reader levels. Transitional Readers are able to read silently most of the time and are developing the ability to read longer books.

Barrows, A. Ivy and Bean, No News is Good News (#8).How are Ivy and Bean going to

make$10? They write a newspaper about Pancake Court and sell it!

Cameron, A. Gloria Rising (Gloria Series). A chance meeting with a female astronaut

encourages Gloria to try to be her best self, even with her difficult teacher.

Christopher, M. One Smooth Move (Extreme Team Series). When his family moves into

his recently deceased grandmother’s house, 10 year old Charlie meets a boy who also likes

to skateboard, but then finds that his own special skateboard is missing.

Cleary, B. Ramona the Pest (Ramona Series). Ramona begins Kindergarten and

discovers all the excitement of her new experiences.

Coville, B.The Dragon of Doom (MOONGOBBLE AND ME #1). Edward gets a job helping

Moongobble the Magician, which is good, because it turns out Moongobble is not a very

good magician.

Davies, J.The Lemonade Crime. Using the rules of our legal system as a guide, Evan and Jessie turn the playground into a courtroom and put Scott Spencer on trial, with fourth-graders serving as judge and jury.

Duffy, B. How to be Cool in Third Grade. It’s not easy to seem cool when the whole class

knows you wear superhero underwear and your mom still kisses you goodbye at the bus

stop, but Robbie York has a plan.

Estes, E. The Hundred Dresses. Students taunt a poor classmate who wears the same

dress to school everyday. You will need a box of tissues nearby as you read this story!

Fine, A. Diary Of A Killer Cat. Ellie is horrified when her cat, Tuffy, drags a dead bird into

the house. Then a mouse. Can Ellie get her pet to change his wild, wild ways?

Giblin, J. Boy Who Saved Cleveland. In 1798, Cleveland, Ohio, was in danger of being

wiped out by a malaria epidemic. Based on fact, this book tells the remarkable story of Seth

Doan, a young boy whose heroic efforts kept his family and neighbors alive and ultimately

put the city of Cleveland on the map.

Greene, S.Owen Foote, super spy. Owen Foote has a new obsession: spying. Owen has

already selected his next target: Mr. Mahoney, his school principal. It’s going to be the

ultimate spy test.

Henry, M. Misty of Chincoteague. The Beebe children raise money to buy one of the wild

Assateague horses.

Howe, J. The Celery Stalks at Midnight(Bunnicula Series). Chester the cat is more

convinced than ever that Bunnicula is a vampire bunny. En route to find Bunnicula, Chester

and his dog friends, Harold and Howie experience a wild array of adventures.

Johnson , K. The Shark King. The artist’s version of a tale of the shape-shifting shark god

Kamohoali’i’s son, Nanaue.

Kelly, D. Babe Ruth And The Baseball Curse?. For over 80 years, after trading away Babe

Ruth, the Red Sox just couldn’t win another World Series. Then, in 2004, along came a

scruffy, scrappy Red Sox team. Could they break Babe Ruth’s curse and win it all?

King-Smith, D. Babe: The Gallant Pig. Orphan pig, Babe, is adopted by a farmer and his

sheep dog. Babe answers the following question, “can there really be a sheep-pig?”

Krosoczka, J. Lunch Lady and the Bake Sale(Lunch Lady#5).The Breakfast Bunch is

excited for the upcoming bake sale, but the snacks go missing, and it's no laughing matter.

Look, L. Alvin Ho: Allergic to Camping, Hiking, and Other Natural Disasters (#2).

Alvin’s worst fear has come true: he has to go camping. What will he do in the wilderness

with bears and . . . pit toilets?

MacDonald, B. Mrs. Piggle Wiggle (Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series). From her upside-down house, the eccentric Mrs. Piggle Wiggle issues to parents marvelous cures for such common children’s diseases as Won’t-Put-Away-Toys-itis, Answerbackism and Fighter-Quarrelitis.

McDonald , M. Stink and the Midnight Zombie Walk.There’s only one week before the new book in the Nightmare on Zombie Street series comes out. Of corpse Stink will be first in line to buy his copy and join the town’s Midnight Zombie Walk!

Morris, G.The Adventures of Sir Lancelot the Great(The Knights Tales).Behold the

exciting, funny adventures of Lancelot, as only the Arthurian author Morris can tell them.

Osborne, M.P.Tales from the Odyssey: The One-Eyed Giant. On his way home from the Trojan War, Odysseus must fight Polyphemus, the Cyclopes.

Prelutsky, J. The New Kid on the Block. Do you think poetry is boring? Let this book of poetry change your mind!

Soto, G. The Cat’s Meow. Eight year old Garciela is amazed when her cat, Pip, starts speaking Spanish.

Thomas, S.M.Get Well, Good Knight. Achoo! The Good Knight gallops through the forest.

Vernon, U.Dragonbreath (#1). It’s hard for Danny Dragonbreath to be the only dragonin school, especially because he can’t breathe fire like other dragons.
