1GENERAL

1.04ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS

.1Co-ordination: Co-ordinate work of this Section with work of other trades for proper time and sequence to avoid construction delays.

3M CANADA GUIDE NOTE: The pre-installation meeting may be deleted if the size and complexity of the project does not require prior co-ordination and review of the barrier system installation.

.2Pre-installation Meeting: Convene pre-installation meeting after Award of Contract and [one week] before starting work of this Section to verify project requirements, substrate conditions and coordination with other building sub-trades, and to review manufacturer’s written installation instructions.

.1Comply with Section 01 31 19 Project Meetings and co-ordinate with other similar pre installation meetings.

.2Notify attendees 2 weeks prior to meeting and ensure meeting attendees include as minimum:

.1Owner;

.2Consultant;

.3Weather barrier installer;

.4Manufacturer’s Technical Representative.

.3Ensure meeting agenda includes review of methods and procedures related to weather barrier installation including co-ordination with related work.

.4Record meeting proceedings including corrective measures and other actions required to ensure successful completion of work and distribute to each attendee within 1 week of meeting.

1.05ACTION AND INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

.1Make submittals in accordance with Contract Conditions and Section 01 33 00 Submittal Procedures.

.2Product Data: Submit product data including manufacturer’s literature for weather barrier materials and accessories, indicating compliance with specified requirements and material characteristics.

.1Submit list on weather barrier manufacturer’s letterhead of materials and accessories to be incorporated into Work.

.2MSDS report.

.3Include product name.

.4Include preparation instructions and recommendations, installation methods, and storage and handling requirements.

.5Include contact information for manufacturer and their representative for this Project.

.3Samples:

.1Submit [100 x 100] mm minimum sample of weather barrier.

.2Submit [300] mm long minimum sample of flashing tape.

.4Test Reports:

.1 Submit evaluation service reports or other independent testing agency reports showing compliance with specified performance characteristics and physical properties.

.5Field Reports: Submit manufacturer’s field reports within 3 days of each manufacturer representative’s site visit and inspection.

.6Sustainable Design (LEED).

.1LEED Submittals: In accordance with Section [01 35 21 – LEED Requirements]

.7Installer Qualifications:

.1Submit letter verifying installer’s experience with work similar to work of this Section.

1.06CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

.1Operation and Maintenance Data: Supply maintenance data for weather barrier materials for incorporation into manual specified in Section 01 78 00 Closeout Submittals.

.2Sustainable Design Closeout Documentation (LEED).

.1Provide calculations on end-of-project recycling rates, salvage rates, and landfill rates for work of this Section demonstrating percentage of construction wastes which were recycled.

.2Submit verification from recycling facility showing receipt of materials.

.3Record Documentation: In accordance with Section 01 78 00 Closeout Submittals.

.1List materials used in weather barrier work.

.2Warranty: Submit warranty documents specified.

1.07QUALITY ASSURANCE

.1Installer Quality Assurance: Work experience of [5] years minimum with work similar to work of this Section.

.2Sustainability Standards Certification (LEED).

.1LEED Canada submittals: In accordance with Section 01 35 21 LEED Requirements.

3M CANADA GUIDE NOTE: The mock-up may be deleted if the size and complexity of the project does not require it. A mock-up is recommended when an air barrier function is required to allow coordination with the work of other trades and installation materials/sequence between different substrates or different air barrier systems. Use the following paragraph only if weather barrier extends more than 3,000 square metres, and is of a repetitive or critical nature.

.3Mock-up: Construct full size 3 m x 3 m mock-up showing weather barrier using proposed procedures, materials and quality of work where directed by Consultant [and in accordance with Section 01 43 00 Quality Assurance].

.1Include examples of joints, inside corners and outside corners.

.2Purpose: To judge quality of work and material installation.

.3Allow Consultant [24] hours minimum prior to inspection of mock-up.

.4Do not proceed with work prior to receipt of written acceptance of mock-up by Consultant.

.5When accepted, mock-up will demonstrate minimum standard of quality required for Work of this Section.

6.Approved mock-up will [not] remain part of finished work.

.7Remove mock-up only after receipt of written approval to remove mock-up from Consultant.

3M CANADA GUIDE NOTE: The following Article although not part of Quality Assurance, can be used to enhance the quality of materials by ensuring that they are delivered and handled properly at the work site.

1.08DELIVERY STORAGE AND HANDLING

.1Delivery and Acceptance Requirements:

.1Deliver material in accordance with Section 01 61 00 Common Product Requirements.

.2Deliver materials and accessories in weather barrier manufacture’s original packaging with identification labels intact and in roll diameter and width to suit project.

.2Storage and Handling Requirements: Store materials off ground and protected from exposure to harmful weather conditions and at temperature conditions recommended by manufacturer.

.1Ensure weather barrier materials are protected from sunlight and UV radiation.

.2Store in original packaging until installed.

.3Long Term Storage: Store weather barrier materials between 16 ºC and 27 ºC, and at relative humidity between 40 and 60 %.

.4Packaging Waste Management:

3M CANADA GUIDE NOTE: For smaller projects that do not have a separate Section for waste management and disposal, delete the following paragraph.

.1Separate and recycle waste packaging materials in accordance with Section 01 74 19 Construction Waste Management and Disposal.

.2Remove waste packaging materials from site and dispose of packaging materials at appropriate recycling facilities.

3M CANADA GUIDE NOTE: For smaller projects that do not have a Waste Management Plan, delete the option referring to a Waste Management Plan.

3.Collect and separate for disposal paper and plastic material in appropriate on-site storage containers for recycling [in accordance with Waste Management Plan].

.1Apply weather barrier only when substrate conditions are between minus 18 ºC and plus 65ºC.

.2Service Temperature Range: Minus 40 ºC to plus 80 ºC.

.3Cover weather barrier within 6 months of installation.

1.10WARRANTY

.1Project Warranty: Refer to Contract Conditions for project warranty provisions.

.2Manufacturer’s warranty: Submit, for Owner’s acceptance, manufacturer’s standard warranty document executed by authorized company official. Manufacturer’s warranty is in addition to and not intended to limit other rights Owner may have under Contract Conditions.

Specify 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Holdfast 70 when particularly large volumes are required. Specify 3M™ Fastbond™ Contact Adhesive 30NF if a waterbased adhesive is required.

3EXECUTION

3.01INSTALLERS

.1Use only installers with [5] years minimum experience with work similar to work of this Section.

3.02EXAMINATION

.1Verification of Conditions: Verify that conditions of substrate previously installed under other Sections or Contracts are acceptable for weather barrier installation in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendations.

.1Visually inspect substrate in presence of Consultant.

.2Ensure surfaces are free of snow, ice, frost, grease and other deleterious materials.

3M CANADA Guide Note: Edit the next five paragraphs to ensure that only those substrates applicable to the project are included. Contact 3M for further recommendations and for recommendations for other substrates.

.2Ensure exterior gypsum sheathing is clean and dry with moisture content less than 19 %.

.1Fill joints and cracks greater than 6 mm but less than 12 mm using sealant in accordance with weather barrier manufacturer’s written recommendations.

.2Fill joints and cracks greater than 12 mm using closed cell foam backer rod and sealant in accordance with weather barrier manufacturer’s written recommendations.

.3Ensure plywood substrate is clean and dry with moisture content less than 16 %.

.1Fill joints and cracks greater than 6 mm but less than 12 mm using sealant in accordance with weather barrier manufacturer’s written recommendations.

.2Fill joints and cracks greater than 12 mm using closed cell foam backer rod and sealant in accordance with weather barrier manufacturer’s written recommendations.

.4Ensure concrete has cured 28 days minimum and surfaces are clean and dry with fins ground flush and void areas filled.

.5Ensure masonry substrates are clean and dry with mortar joints struck flush.

.6Ensure metal surfaces are clean and dry.

.7Ensure substrate surfaces are free from grease, oil, unbounded paint, corrosion or other substances that would adversely affect adhesion of weather barrier to substrate.

.7Inform Consultant of unacceptable conditions immediately upon discovery.

.8Proceed with installation only after unacceptable conditions have been remedied and after receipt of written approval to proceed from Consultant.

.2Connection to Other Barrier Systems: Ensure surface is clean and smooth and free of air pockets or voids as required to achieve adhesive bond.

.1Test adhesion by installing 150 x 150 mm test match of weather barrier over other barrier system in accordance with weather barrier manufacturer’s written recommendations.

.1Removal of test patch should not be possible without permanent damage to either test patch or other barrier system.

.2If test fails, contact weather barrier manufacturer immediately for further recommendations.

.3Start of weather barrier installation indicates installer’s acceptance of substrate installation conditions.

3.03preparation

.1Ensure surfaces are clean, free from dirt and debris and have not absorbed water before starting installation.

.2Test adhesion between weather barrier and substrate before starting installation.

.3Prime surfaces of difficult to stick to substrates using substrate primer in accordance with weather barrier manufacturer’s written recommendations.

.4Fill cracks and gaps greater than 6 mm between substrate and penetrations using sealant in accordance with weather barrier manufacturer’s written recommendations.

3.04INSTALLATION

3M CANADA GUIDE NOTE: Refer to the weather barrier manufacturer’s current installation guide for detailed information regarding installation.

.1Install weather barrier in accordance with sheet manufacturer’s written recommendations.

.2Install only when substrate temperature is above minus 18 ºC.

3M CANADA GUIDE NOTE: Buildings are designed to accommodate thermal and seismic movement. 3M™ Self-Adhered Air and Vapor Barrier Membrane 3015 must be installed to allow this movement throughout the life of the structure.

.3Thermal and Seismic Movement:

.1Limit coverage area of weather barrier to single storey and shingle subsequent layers over top leading edge of weather barrier to accommodate thermal and seismic movement.

.4General Weather Barrier Installation:

.1Pre-cut weather barrier into individual manageable lengths for installation by pulling weather barrier off main roll to desired length.

.1Cut weather barrier square to factory edges.

.2Minimum dimension in each direction: 100 mm.

.3Wind cut lengths into a separate roll for ease of handling and installation.

.2Fold starting edge back over itself to crease paper release liner.

.3Peel back liner to expose 50 to 75 mm strip of adhesive side of weather barrier.

.4Apply weather barrier to substrate as soon as adhesive side of weather barrier is exposed.

.1Ensure accurate initial alignment and positioning since repositioning after initial contact is difficult.

.2After initial adhesive strip of weather barrier is aligned and positioned, set weather barrier by rolling material back against exposed adhesive.

.5Start at lowest point and work to top, running length of sheets horizontally and overlapping upper sheets in shingle fashion

.1Ensure sides and ends of sheets have [50] mm minimum overlap.

.2Ensure inside and outside corners have 150 mm minimum overlap.

.6Install sheets without gaps, wrinkles, creases or tears.

.7Stagger vertical seams from floor to floor or separate floors using horizontal strip of weather barrier.

.8Unwind roll while simultaneously pulling release liner.

.1Maintain pressure against substrate to ensure adhesion.

.2Wipe weather barrier down from middle to outer edges using feathering motion to ensure smooth surface.

.9Align and overlap layers.

.10Flash and seal top edges, around openings and penetrations, and other locations in accordance with weather barrier manufacturer’s written recommendations.

.11Roll weather barrier with rubber roller to ensure tight seal to substrate.

.1Give extra attention to overlaps, joints and exposed edges of weather barrier sheet.

3.05penetrations

3M CANADA GUIDE NOTE: Weather barrier can be applied around penetrations either before or after the main weather barrier sheets have been installed. However it is recommended the weather barrier be installed around penetrations and openings before the main sheets are installed for extra protection from the elements.

.1Penetrations - General: Install weather barrier around penetrations before application of main weather barrier sheets.

.1Ensure weathertight seals at joints.

.2Window and Door Openings:

.1Cut weather barrier detail strips from main roll to lengths suitable for opening size.

.1Remove first 50 - 75 mm of release liner and align and position weather barrier detail strips to each sill corner.

.2Ensure detail strips extend to full depth of sill and 50 mm minimum to jamb, sill and face of opening.

.3Overlap joints 50 mm minimum.

.2Sill Wrap: Apply appropriately sized piece of weather barrier to bottom of opening, folding into opening to form sill and dams.

.1Ensure joints are overlapped 100 mm minimum to exterior face.

.3Jamb Wrap: Apply appropriately sized pieces of weather barrier to opening jambs extending 100 mm minimum from opening to exterior face.

.1Fold into opening and shingle lap over previously installed sill wrap.

.4Head Wrap: Apply appropriately sized pieces of weather barrier to opening head extending 100 mm minimum from opening to exterior face.

.1Fold into opening and shingle lap over previously installed jamb wraps.

.5Roll weather barrier overlaps and edges with rubber roller to ensure adhesion and smooth surface finish.
