About Tonda

Tonda Lee focuses her practice on property litigation and insurance coverage involving both homeowners’ and commercial losses. She has assisted her clients with complex insurance investigations and coverage analyses dealing with condominium, mortgagee, vacancy, fraud, business income, arson, and waiver issues. She assists her clients throughout the coverage stage and represents them in related litigation, as needed. She has taken dozens of examinations under oath and written numerous coverage opinion letters. When assisting her clients during a coverage investigation, Tonda seeks not only to assist the client with resolving the claim but also to ensure that the claim is handled in good faith and that the client’s coverage position is defensible should litigation arise. Tonda recently obtained a directed verdict for an insurance company on a bad faith claim brought by its insured. Following the bench trial in that commercial coverage case, the judge significantly reduced the insured’s claimed damages by more than 80 percent.

Tonda has also been retained by her clients to defend their insureds against third-party lawsuits pursuant to the insureds’ general liability policies. These lawsuits have involved warehouse fires and construction related personal injuries and property damages. In the first-party and third-party contexts, Tonda has successfully argued contested discovery motions, motions to dismiss, and motions for summary judgment in cases with potential liabilities ranging from $100,000 to $150,000,000. She obtained summary judgment on behalf of an insurance company in a business income coverage dispute, and she has successfully gotten courts to dismiss complaints untimely filed by insureds pursuant to the limitations provision in their insurance policy. Additionally, she has successfully resolved cases through mediation and arbitration.

Tonda received her law degree from IIT/Chicago-Kent College of Law and is admitted to practice in Illinois. She has also been admitted pro hac vice in Iowa.
