Explanatory notes

1The source documents for this unit standard are the Māori text Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the English text The Treaty of Waitangi. For the purpose of this unit standard the generic term Te Tiriti refers to both texts.

2Glossary

Mātauranga Māori is inclusive of all ages and is whānau supported, modelled and monitored. It is within this context that this unit standard has been developed for Māori adults.

Learnerrefers to the person who is studying this unit standard.

Learner’s community is to be identified by the learner and may include but is not limited to – iwi, hapū, whānau, hapori, the educational community of the learner.

Māori Leader refers to a Māori person considered a leader by Māori in a specific context. Their development is defined as their personal journey through the education system and how this influenced and shaped them for the leadership role(s) they have held or currently hold.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Examine the role of the Waitangi Tribunal and its impact on iwi Māori and Aotearoa.

Evidence requirements

1.1The history of the Waitangi Tribunal is outlined from inception to the present day.

1.2The Waitangi Tribunal's decisions are analysed in terms of their impact on iwi Māori in an education context.

1.3The Waitangi Tribunal's decisions are analysed in terms of their impact on non-Māori in an education context.

Rangeevidence of three is required.

Outcome 2

Examine the current implications of colonisation and therefore the impact of implementation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in relation to the learner’scommunity in an education context.

Evidence requirements

2.1The historical impact of colonisation on the learner’s community is outlined in terms of sociological trends and conditions.

Rangesociological trends and conditions include but are not limited to – attitudinal, socio-cultural, socio-economical, demographic, and political.

2.2A future course of action for the implementation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi is determined on the basis of the community’s history and current situations.

Outcome 3

Identify current implications of Te Tiriti for learner’s personal self-development.

Evidence requirements

3.1Personal, including the education background, of a selected Māori leader within the learner’s community is studied and related to their development.

3.2Learners cultural history is traced with reference to land, resources and education.

3.3Implications of Te Tiriti o Waitangi are analysed in terms of impact on learner’scultural history and within the wider context of Aotearoa.

3.4Implications of Te Tiriti o Waitangi are analysed in terms of impact on learner’sprofessional development.
