2.1AQURON® CURE AND SEAL CONCRETE PROTECTION FOR CONCRETE
AQURON® 2000™ catalytic agent in a waterborne proprietary silicate base complies to moisture retention requirements of ASTM C309, a deep penetrating, non toxic waterborne solution which forms an insoluble calcium silicate gel within the concrete matrix. Tested to have nil crystalline silica. Also acts as flooring preparation treatment to eliminate drying delay beneath floor coverings.
AQURON® 2000™ is a highly reactive catalytic agent in a waterborne proprietary silicate base. It is clear, non - toxic, odourless. When applied it penetrates below the surface as far as - 150mm producing a silica hydrogel inside the concrete matrix.
The mode of action for AQURON® 2000™ is to bind all internal moisture in a hydrogel evenly throughout the depth of penetration.
The hydrogel formed creates an impervious concrete preventing further internal migration of moisture.
If you specify this system it will also act as a Concrete Moisture Protection for floors to be covered with floor coverings or coatings, and there is no need to add work section 6135A AQURON® 2000 FLOORING MOISTURE PROTECTION.
3.EXECUTION
Conditions
3.1TECHNIQUE DISCUSSION
Before application, arrange a meeting to confirm the method of preparation and surface treatment. Refer to AQURON® 2000™ Flooring Protection Treatment leaflet for Simple 5 Rules and 8 Precautions, this outlines key issues for flooring installers with detailed flooring installation information for AQURON® 2000™ treated surfaces.
Refer to AQURON® 2000™ Flooring Protection Treatment leaflet:
5 SIMPLE RULES TO ENSURE YOUR PROTECTION:
-1. ) Ensure that the surface is absorbent (if it's not absorbent, it must be made absorbent for adhesive reactions to take place).
-2. ) Ensure that surface is clean and has profile/grip/key for the bonding of adhesives/ coatings (If it's absorbent, it will have profile / grip / key).
-3. ) Ensure a full spread of adhesive is applied.
-4. ) Ensure the concrete is at least 28 days old.
-5. ) Ensure the AQURON 2000 is applied at least 72 hours before flooring is to be installed (Surface must be visually dry prior to any preparation taking place).
8 PRECAUTIONS:
-1. ) Check that the concrete has in fact been treated with AQURON 2000 and it is filed in AQURON CORPORATION records.
-2. ) Ensure the same good trade practices which need to be applied to untreated concrete do not change when the concrete has been treated with AQURON 2000.
-3. ) Highly polished or tight concrete surfaces may require grinding to ensure profile/grip/key.
-4. ) During installation and until adhesives have completely cured, cover windows where installed floor coverings are exposed to direct sunlight.
-5. ) Ensure that the adhesive has fully matured before walking on floor covering.
-6. ) Allow adhesives to properly tack-off. Especially for vinyls which have a closed cell backing or a vinyl without profile and grip.
-7. ) Ensure "wet inlay" flooring installations are applied to a completely absorbent surface or excess moisture is given time to evaporate.
-8.) AQURON MVB (moisture vapour block). For non-adhered or strip glued flooring installations, the surface of the AQURON 2000 treated concrete must be sealed with AQURON MVB. This product provides the same effect as a full spread of adhesive.
Application - new concrete
Saw cutting can be carried out either before or after application.
Application to be carried out by an AQURON® approved applicator strictly in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations for AQURON® 2000™ as cure and seal.
When utilizing AQURON® 2000™ as cure and seal other methods for curing, surface hardening, anti-dusting, moisture and vapour proofing can be eliminated.
Floor coverings or coatings can be installed to AQURON® 2000™ treated concrete substrates after 28 days from the date of the concrete pour providing AQURON® 2000™ key issues are followed.
3.2AQURON® CURE AND SEAL CONCRETE PROTECTION FOR NEW CONCRETE
Apply AQURON® 2000™ to fresh concrete as soon as the surface is firm enough to walk on. Apply AQURON® 2000™ at a rate of 4.5 m²/litre or at a rate to satisfy the absorbency of the concrete.
Application - aged concrete
3.3Not Applicable to this specification.
3.5PREPARING FOR FLOOR COVERINGS AFTER AQURON® 2000™ APPLICATION
Refer to AQURON® 2000™ Flooring Protection Treatment leaflet for Simple 5 Rules and 8 Precautions, this outlines key issues for flooring installers with detailed flooring installation information for AQURON® 2000™ treated surfaces.
3.6REMOVE CONTAMINANTS
Where oils or contaminants are purged to, or lay on the concrete surface, any such contaminants must be removed from the surface while still soluble or alternatively as they become dried. Determine on site the method of removing contaminants to use a progress sander with vacuum, grinding, shot blasting, scraping.
3.7TIMING AND SURFACE ABSORBENCY
Floor coverings or coatings should not be installed to AQURON® 2000™ treated concrete substrates earlier than 28 days from the date of the concrete pour or within 72 hours after the application of AQURON® 2000™
Check the total floor area to ensure surface is absorbent and voids have not been filled or glassed over by AQURON® 2000™. Where this occurs abrade the surface before installing floor preparation, adhesives or coatings.
To ensure satisfactory adhesive grip and bonding as a part of general floor preparation, scrape, stone or progress sand concrete floors before the application of further preparations and floor coverings.
AQURON® 2000™ will give an excellent mechanical fix for, and is compatible with all known adhesives and coatings, subject to the installer following the instructions from the supplier of preparations, adhesives or coatings.
3.8RELATIVE HUMIDITY LEVEL
Relative humidity levels "before and after" AQURON® 2000™ treatment will read the same or higher as AQURON® 2000™ "locks up" the moisture.
AQURON 2000 is guaranteed to eliminate moisture related delamination regardless of the relative humidity reading.
3.9CONTAMINATION OR GLAZING
Should any contamination or glazing be visible on the surface, test this with water. If this produces greasiness, this must be removed to ensure a moisture absorbing non-greasy surface.
3.10CONDENSATION
If condensation occurs do not install floor coverings until the ambient temperature of the area rises to allow absorption of the condensation into the general atmosphere. The concrete surface temperature must be greater than 7 to 8°C.
3.11HARD POLISHED CONCRETE
Grind/abrade any hard polished surface substrate before the installation of preparations, floorings or coatings.
With floors being trowelled to a hard burnished finish (U3+) becoming more common, it is important that this requirement is given careful consideration, regardless of whether the floor is AQURON 2000 treated or not. AQURON 2000 will only accentuate an already impermeable floor surface and if no action is taken to create an absorbent surface, adhesives are effectively being encapsulated between two impervious surfaces i.e. smooth AQURON treated concrete and underside of floor product.
3.12ADHESIVES
Where adhesives are applied over AQURON® 2000™ treated concrete allow sufficient tack off time as the greater percentage of moisture within the adhesives, needs to be released into the atmosphere.
AQURON® 2000™ being an internal protection, only the concrete surface can absorb moisture.
Completion
3.13LEAVE TO REQUIRED STANDARD FOR FOLLOWING PROCEDURES
Leave adjacent materials, fittings and finishes clean and to the standard required by following procedures.
The following guidance notes apply to the laying of floor coverings and finishes.
Ensure proper open time for adhesives is observed or adjust as the installer's experience may dictate.
It is essential for urethane adhesives and coatings that the concrete surface is completely dry. Note urethane manufacturer application guides.
Timber/laminate coverings must be installed with a full adhesive spread or a surface sealer to act as a lid e.g. "AQURON MVB" over AQURON® 2000™ treated concrete.
3.14REMOVE RUBBISH
Remove debris, unused materials and elements from carrying out this part of the work from the site.
