Mon Feb 24th, 2014 – DawnviewPublic School

Notes by Michelle Mancell – Secretary

1.Welcome

5 people in attendance

2. Chapter Website

We have cancelled our local website, now that we can be on the CPF Ont. Website for free.

-Members in attendance feel Facebook and Twitter not necessary at this time. CPF site should be focus and once established all members will be notified to check the CPF ON site link for meeting and event info.

3.Concours – March 26, 2014 Board of Ed. Office Chesley 6:30pm

Grade 4 & above including high school – French Speech competition

-FI students compete in-class, those selected students go on to compete at the Board of Ed. Office in Chesley on March 26th.

-Secondary students selected from Chesley competition go on to YorkUniversity

-Looking for Volunteers for event in Chesley, both French and English speaking helpers needed

-Michelle E. will contact judges (her job of past)

4.Adult French Courses

Alanda worked with Ann Marie Barnes – System Curriculum Lead Teacher at BWDSB. They set up and ran a Level 1 French course last Aug for 15-17 EAs and ECEs from all over Bluewater Board. Everyone taking the course had to purchase a membership. Board of Ed paid for the instructor and the memberships. We only received memberships from the participants that lived in our Chapter area.

-Board wants to set up courses again. Sarah Chalmers will continue to teach course. Courses are not open to the public at this time however, depending on numbers from the board office they may open to CPF members.

-Level 1 March 24-27 5:00pm-7:30pm

-Level 2 May 5-8 5:00pm -7:30pm (potential for 30 participants)

-Hope we can set up a Level 3 Conversational French after Level 2 completed

-Chapter will apply for grants to run the course since we don’t get many memberships out of running it.

5. Summary of Events in 2013-14

-Coordinated French Classes for Educators at BDSB Aug 2013

-Attended Let’s Learn Clinics (Kindergarten registration) in November 2013

-Purchased Dawnview AMO Membership

-Presented FI Parents Support Night at Hanover Height in December 2013

-Coordinating Adult French Classes for Educators at BDSB March & May 2014

-End of year Picnic – coming June 2014

Ideas Discussed for 2014-15 school year.

-Purchasing and donating Verb-a-thon games to the schools. We had offered to buy it in the past but no teacher showed interest. Perhaps re-email teachers or just buy and give it anyway.

-Would like to see more French books at the book fairs next year. Michelle E. will try to contact a lady from Tara who sells French books. Perhaps she can come to the picnic in June and set up a sales table – perfect for summer reading.

6. Other items – School Transition

Meetings have been held for current Grades 6 -7s regarding the transition to JDSS in September. The students went to JDSS once for a tour and the teacher went to HanoverHeights to discuss courses for next year. The Grade 8 class will be located near the office at JD and the Grade 7 class will be upstairs. Lunch break schedules have not been determined. The focus of school officials is getting the students and parents comfortable.

Dawnview Construction starts in the spring as soon as possible. Office will be moved to the front entrance. There will be no more portable classrooms. Adding new kindergarten classroom at north entrance. Adding 1 or 2 more classrooms. POD is staying. Plans are available for viewing from Principal Sarah Slater.

Additional Thoughts and Concerns

-Dawnview needs to be more family oriented. There is no Christmas Concert or other assemblies for families unless the classroom teacher organizes something for that class only.

-Concerns and suggestions should be emailed to John Chapman our Trustee

-More attendance is needed at the School Community Council Meetings which alternate between Dawnview and HanoverHeights as a join school community.

-Hoping next year the meetings will be separate for each school as the school community dynamics will be different.

Next Meeting: TBA April or May for official AGM and planning of Year End Picnic
