Due to the 8th grade students doing the reality store, as a team we feel it is necessary for our students to understand banking practices before the reality store takes place. With that being said, I am now going to start teaching my 7th grade students how a checking account works. I will begin using the FNB simulation in 7th grade instead of 8th but this will be a catch up year for 8th grade. We will not reconcile in 7th grade, but we will master check writing and balancing.
Day 1: We will stem from budgeting to talk about the importance of maintaining a budget while using a checking account. We will watch BrainPop video on banking services and then discuss the importance of a checking account.
Questions: What is the difference between a checking and a savings account?
When is a good time to open a checking account?
Why is important to maintain your checking account?
Day 2-3: Students will use simulation checking account curriculum provided by First National Bank for the rest of the checking account unit. Students will be required to complete monthly check transactions, registers, and reconciliations. There is an information section at the beginning that covers vocabulary and step by step instructions for opening a checking account, completing a deposit ticket, writing a check, completing the check register. Students will get a note taking handout and read the sections while completing.
Day 4: Police, Special Response Units, and K-9 Unit Career Cluster Speakers
Day 5: Encore Auction/Pep Rally

Students will identify and describe basic components of a budget (e.g., income, fixed and flexible expenses and savings) and develop a savings plan to achieve a specific goal
Objective: Students will identify and describe basic components of a budget.

Day 1: Proficient Students will create their own vacation budget. They will plan a trip to Disney World. They will have a budget template to follow but they will do all the research and plan their itinerary for their trip. We will discuss the importance of planning and researching information about your destination before you ever go on vacation. If you plan ahead you are more likely to stick to your budget and not go over. Students will use specific links on the computer that I have created for them to plan their trip to Disney World!!!
Day 1 : Research Day!
Day 2: Create a working budget. They must understand that they can always make changes to their budget. It is not stuck like glue.
Day 3: Create their budget for their final Disney World trip!!
Struggling Students: If students did not reach mastery instead of the Disney World budget, we worked in small groups and mastered the vocabulary and then worked on their personal financial goal and made a spending plan to achieve that in small group.
Day 4: Police, Special Response Units, and K-9 Unit Career Cluster Speakers
Day 5: Encore Auction/Pep Rally
