29_ Order and Design_Homework

Before we begin our continuation of classification of living things, please send me an email report on your plants. Kyla, did you inherit Cannon's? Are the seeds ready to harvest and plant? (This would mean the seed pods are all brown.) If we've got some that are ready, we'll replant next week and if you have selectively pollinated, we may see some results in the second generation! The question remains: Who, among the Order and Design students, is a budding Mendel?? (Get it? "Budding...")

On to classification:

King Phillip Cried Out For Goodness Sake.

This is the nemonic I use to remember: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family Genus, Species.

EVERY identified living thing, from one-celled amoeba to multi-celled, complex organisms like anteaters, are identified using this system. According to binomial nomenclature (also known as two-name naming system), we use only the last two parts of the identifier. To review, the name is written in italics with the genus capitalized. Like this: Homo sapiens Now, if you handwrite a name, don't worry about trying to italicize it!

Friday:

____ Send me, via email, your homework from the last two homework assignments. I will try to format the dichotomous keys so that I can make them available to you electronically!

I have something "new" for us to try. Please bear with me as I work out the kinks --- I've added a wiki to my website. What's a wiki? Well, wikipedia is the most famous one! A wiki is an editable body of information found on the web.

So I've created a wiki at:

The intent is that YOU will be able to edit the page and add information.

____ Go to the wiki page (there is a link in the resources column of my website or use the above link).

Read the instructions at the top of the page. Click on the "edit" link at the top right. Now you can add information. Please be cautious as you do, so as not to accidentally delete the additions of another. You may note if you find contradictory information though! We want out zoo to be accurate! You might want to experiment first, by adding a couple of lines, scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking "Save page" to see what your work looks like.

____ Begin to add information to our ZOO! Don't forget to initial your additions. As a class, this whole page needs to be completed by Thursday's class and you each need to contribute to at least three of the living things categories.

___ Please, email me with any problems right away so I can try to fix them! It took me a good long while to figure out how to add this to the webpage and I'm not done learning!

I will send along more homework on Monday! This is NOT all. So work on this over the weekend!
