Purpose / This unit standard is for experienced people working in a joinery workshop producing timber stairs.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:demonstrate knowledge of manufacturing geometric stairs and balustrades; and manufacture geometric timber stairs,for residential and commercial buildings.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of manufacturing geometric stairs and balustradesfor residential and commercial buildings.
Evidence requirements
1.1The procedure for setting out geometrical stairs and balustrades is described in terms of workplace practices.
Rangeprocedure includes but is not limited to – analyse working drawings, establish site conditions, make stair calculations, set quantities of materials, produce set-out.
1.2The procedure for selecting and machining timber for geometric stairs is described in terms of workplace practices.
1.3The process of assembling stairs is described in terms of workplace practices.
Rangeprocess includes but is not limited to – glue laminations, fabricate stair components.
1.4The process of assembling, fitting, and fixing handrails and balustrades is described in terms of workplace practices.
1.5Any protective measures required for stair components are identified and described in terms of workplace practices.
Outcome 2
Manufacture geometric timber stairs for residential and commercial buildings.
Evidence requirements
2.1The type of stair is identified from the working drawings.
2.2Site conditions are measured and documented in accordance with workplace practice.
2.3The stair calculations are completed in accordance with workplace practice.
2.4The quantities ofmaterialsare calculated and an order placed in accordance with workplace practice.
2.5The stair is set out on full-sized formers to conform to the working drawings.
2.6Stair timber is machined to match full-sized set-out in accordance with workplace practice.
2.7Joints are worked in accordance with workplace practice.
2.8Laminations are glued for curved components to conform to the full-sized setout in accordance with workplace practice.
2.9Stair components are factory fabricated to the requirements of the working drawings.
2.10The stair is assembled to conform to the working drawings.
2.11Handrails and balustrades are assembled, fitted, and fixed in accordance with the working drawings.
2.12Stairs are finished and protected in accordance with the specifications.
