Purpose / This unit standard is for experienced people working in a joinery workshop producing cabinetry items.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of hardware used with special fitments to produce complex joinery items; make a template for manufacturing complex joinery items; and manufacture special fitments to produce complex joinery items.

Explanatory notes

1 All workplace practices must comply with current legislation, codes of practice, and documented site safety procedures for personal, product, and worksite safety.

2 Legislation and regulations relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995.

3Definition

Fitment refers to any joinery item that is not part of the base joinery work.

4Evidence is required of three different special fitments produced in the candidate’s workplace or simulated environment. The workplace could include producing special fitments for shop fit outs or manufacturing kitchens on site.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of hardware used with special fitments to produce complex joinery items.

Evidence requirements

1.1Types of hinge used on special fitments are identified and described in terms of their uses.

Rangehinges may include but are not limited to – concealed, butt, flush, overlay, piano, back flap;

evidence is required of four types of hinges.

1.2Types of general and specialised hardware used on special fitments are identified and described in terms of their uses.

Rangegeneral and specialised hardware may includes but is not limited to – handles, drawer systems and slides, locks, guides, plinth legs, catches, roller doors, adjustable legs, racks, baskets, toe space facings, pull-out racks and pantries, swivel corner storage units, bins, rails, cutlery inserts;

evidence is required of four types of general and specialised hardware.

1.3Types of screw used on special fitments are identified and described in terms of their uses.

Rangescrews may include but are not limited to – superscrews, twinscrews, hingescrews, base-plate and drawer slide fixing;

evidence is required of four types of screw.

1.4Types of knock-down fitting used on special fitments are identified and described in terms of their uses.

Rangeknock-down fittings may include but are not limited to – joint fasteners, top connectors, insert nuts, double-ended studs, connecting brackets and clips, cams and dowels, connecting screws;

evidence is required of four types of knock-down fitting.

1.5Non timber-based materials used to produce special fitments are identified and described in terms of their uses.

Rangeevidence is required of four different non timber-based materials.

Outcome 2

Make a template for manufacturing complex joinery items.

Evidence requirements

2.1Job requirements are identified in terms of their relationship to the agreed design.

2.2Any variances are identified and calculated to ensure final measurements meet the agreed design.

2.3A template is designed and produced in accordance with the agreed design both in the workshop and scribed on-site.

2.4The template is cut out in accordance with worksite practice.

2.5Template is used to set out job requirements to meet the agreed design prior to installation.

Rangerequirements include but are not limited to – angles, curves, shapes.

Outcome 3

Manufacture special fitments to produce complex joinery items.

Evidence requirements

3.1Client requirements for a special fitment are clarified and agreed in accordance with workplace practice.

3.2The fitment units are identified from the working drawings, material quantities are calculated, and an order is placed in accordance with workplace practice.

3.3The units are set out to conform to the working drawings and workplace practice.

3.4The units are machined, assembled, and finished to conform to the set-out and specifications.

3.5Attachments are fitted as detailed on the working drawings.

3.6Finished product conforms to working drawings and client requirements in accordance with workplace practice.
