Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the area of kitchen design and planning.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of cabinet construction and installation and the impact on a kitchen design, and apply cabinet construction and installation requirements to a kitchen design and seek client approval.

2Legislation that applies to this unit standard includes – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

3Definitions

Worksite requirements–refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality specifications, legislative requirements.

Client – refers to the person who has commissioned the design brief.

Design brief – refers to the design parameters agreed between the kitchen designer and the client.

4Evidence is required of a completed kitchen design.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of cabinet construction and installation and the impact on a kitchen design.

Evidence requirements

1.1Types of cabinet construction are identified and described in terms of their impact on a kitchen design.

Rangecabinets include but are not limited to –custom built, overlay, face frame system.

1.2Components, hardware and materials used in cabinet construction are identified and described in terms of their function.

Rangecomponents may include but are not limited to – plinth, adjustable legs, rails, base, sides, backs, shelves, mullion;

hardware includes but is not limited to – hinges, drawer runners, handles, interior mechanical fittings;

materials may include but are not limited to – medium density fibreboard, moisture resistant board, low pressure laminates, solid timber.

1.3Advantages and disadvantages of modular systems are identified and described in terms of their impact on a kitchen design.

1.4Methods of cabinet installation are identified and described in accordance with the reference.

Rangeevidence of three different methods is required.

Outcome 2

Apply cabinet construction and installation requirements to a kitchen design and seek client approval.

Evidence requirements

2.1Cabinet construction and installation requirements are incorporated into the kitchen design in accordance with worksite requirements and the design brief.

Rangecabinet construction and installation requirements include but are not limited to – types of cabinet construction, components, hardware, materials.

2.2Client approval for the cabinet construction and installation requirements is sought in accordance with worksite requirements.
