1Definition
Specific design is a design that ensures compliance with the Building Act 2004 when the construction requirements of a building deviates from, or is beyond the scope of recognised industry standards (New Zealand Standards, Australia/New Zealand Standards, British Standards and other published standards that govern the construction industry).
2Credit for this unit standard indicates compliance with industry practice. Industry practice refers to the ability to demonstrate knowledge that reflects the uniformity, finish quality and material economies currently accepted within industry.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of the construction of concrete masonry structures.
Performance criteria
1.1Types of concrete masonry structures are described in terms of their features and uses.
Rangepointed, flush, stack bond, stretcher bond, size, finish.
1.2The requirements for the setting out and construction of concrete masonry structures are described in accordance with specific design.
Rangefoundations, position, reinforcing, plumb, level, height, wash out ports.
1.3Methods of calculating materials required for construction of masonry structures are described, and accurate sample calculations performed in accordance with industry practice.

1.4Methods of storing materials are described in terms of manufacturer’s recommendations.
Element 2
Demonstrate knowledge of the construction of paving.
Rangeconcrete, exposed aggregate, pavers, asphalt.
Performance criteria
2.1Types of paving are described in terms of their features and uses.
2.2The requirements for the setting out and construction of paved areas are described in accordance with specific design.
Rangeexcavation, substrate, foundations, position, reinforcing, levels, drainage, falls.
2.3Methods of calculating materials required for construction of paving are described and accurate sample calculations performed in accordance with industry practice.
2.4Methods of storing materials are described in terms of manufacturer’s recommendations.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
