Members Booklet

Established 1972

Introduction to the Club

The Club was formed in 1972 by Mr Neil Withers (chief coach) and Mr Harry Tyler (President). Over the years the Club has had 5 chief coaches including our present chief coach, Ray Preston.

The Club was one of six Clubs who took part in the first Hertfordshire League Gala in 1978 prior to the full league starting the following year.

The Club has taken part in Hertfordshire Major and Peanuts Leagues every year since they started finishing runners up in the Major League, Division 2 on one occasion and have also been the winners of the Peanuts League, Division 2.

All members are encouraged to take part in Club Competitions and to swim for the Club when selected.

General

Due to the closure of Kings Langley pool in July 2016 we are transferring our home to York House School, Redheath, Sarratt Road, Croxley Green, Rickmansworth WD3 4LW.

As well as poolside staff you may from time to time see some of our senior swimmers helping out. These young adults are taking their Duke of Edinburgh Award and we feel it is important to support them in their endeavours.

Volunteers

We are always in need of volunteers to help out in several areas. If you feel you can be of assistance please let us know.

Membership Fees (currently £225.00 p.a.)

Membership fees are annual and although we allow payment by term or monthly standing order the full year needs to be paid. The membership should be unbroken to enable the swimmer to compete with us at in-house and outside events. If fees remain unpaid for a term the member will be deemed to have left. If they re-join at a later date they will not be able to compete until they have been a continuous member for a further three months.

Fees will be reviewed on an annual basis at the AGM and will be posted by email. The current fees and methods of payment will be sent to you before the beginning of term.

Any queries relating to fees should be notified in writing to the KLSC Committee and handed to a member of staff to pass on or sent via email to

Club Event Calendar

This is produced annually and gives details of all events programmed in the current year. A copy will be posted on our website.

You will find details of forthcoming events on the bottom of your emails and from time to time a reminder email will be sent out.

We like to give as much notice as possible for the Club events programmed for the coming year. We also hope that this enables our members to be available for the few competitive events which are run during the year and that are so important to the competitive success of the Club.

Please ensure that we have an up to date note of your email address.

Expectations of Club Members

SAFETY is of prime importance to all of us here at KLSC. It is imperative that all swimmers, regardless of age, act sensibly during swimming sessions. Any Club member who is seen acting in an unsafe manner will be asked to leave the pool and get dressed immediately.

Young members are not allowed to leave the building unaccompanied. They are not allowed to play outside in the school grounds. We share the school with other organisations and do not know who else is wandering about. It is also unhealthy as most swimmers do not dry themselves completely or wrap up after training. The pool staff are responsible for the children while they are on poolside, they are not to be expected to supervise the changing areas or outside.

RESPECT AND CONSIDERATION for each other, regardless of age or ability. Teasing/bragging or any form of bullying will not be tolerated. Confidence and team building is an important part of our training session. Club members are expected to be respectful and polite to the coaching staff and their peers on all occasions. This includes when the Club travels to other venues for galas.

LIFE SKILLS are considered a key element in our teaching at KLSC. We hope that each member will develop their full potential whilst swimming with us as well as improving on their own expectations.

Most of our members use their swimming training to support other sports or cannot commit to longer training as expected by other local Clubs. If a member is identified as having a swimming potential higher than we can support either due to lack of training time available or level of competition, we will advise the member accordingly and provide as much support as possible in finding a more suitable Club to support their specific swimming requirements.

COMMITMENT to competition is expected. We only enter 2 events within the County, which allows us to demonstrate our Club skills and strengths. Any competition provides our members, committee and teacher/coaches with a good measure of progress within the Club. Apathy always breeds despondency in everyone involved.

CLUB KIT is expected to be worn when competing on behalf of the Club. Most of these items can be purchased from the Club.

Details are available in this booklet.

Members are expected to wear swimming hats during training sessions but costumes other than Club kit are allowed although boys are not to wear big parachute shorts. We would, however, ask that club kit is worn at all competitive events outside of our training venues.

SPLIT MEDLEY (These usually take place June/July)

This event is designed so that more than one person may win an award. If there is a swimmer who is strong in all strokes they cannot take all the trophies but will take the overall trophy within their age group.

For example:

John competed in the fastest time for all his strokes in every event, he wins the overall trophy. Graham was next fastest in the first event, so he wins that trophy. Graham was also next fastest in event 3 but as he has already won a trophy in event 2, Paul, who came third, will win the trophy for event 3 … and so on …

Every competitor at the end of the event has their times added together and if they competed last year, these times are compared to last year’s times and a percentage of improvement is calculated. The biggest percentage in improvement wins the Flatt & Mead Trophy.

The swimmers do not swim against their own age group (only in the Mini Medley). A draw is made and it is quite likely a 10 year old will be swimming against a 16 year old.

MINI MEDLEY (These are held at the same time as Split Medley)

This is for the under 10 year olds. They are required to swim one length of front crawl, back stroke and breast stroke. Butterfly is not performed in this age group.

Main rules of Split/Mini Medley

·  The competition is performed under ASA Rules and includes the one start rule (disqualification if a swimmer moves on the block prior to the start)

Distance events (These are held twice a year – Spring and Autumn)

This event provides an opportunity to swim 400 meters in the Spring and again in the Autumn. Those improving on their times set in the Spring will receive an award.

Main rules for distance evening

·  MUST swim in both distance evenings to qualify for the trophy

·  The competition is performed under ASA rules (one start rule)

·  Closing date is final

Club Championships

(These usually take place during October/November)

This internal competition is held for Club members to compete against each other over a period of three Sunday evenings at York Houses.

Medals are presented on the night and later at our Xmas Fun Gala with a trophy, which is held by the winner for 1 year. It is expected that care be taken of the trophy as it is passed to the recipient the following year.

Main rules for Club Championship

·  The competition is performed under ASA rules and includes the one start rule (disqualification if a swimmer moves on the block prior to start)

·  Fees MUST be in by the closing date otherwise the swimmer will only be able to compete on a time-trial basis only.

Eastern Region Major League and Peanuts League

We try to arrange most events on a Club night but these two County Championships always take place on a Saturday.

These events give us the opportunity to advertise our Club to the County as well as allowing our members to swim competitively against other swimming Clubs in our league.

In the past we have struggled to complete a team in certain age groups but more recently have fielded good strong teams and the results have reflected in this. All we are asking in reality is a MAXIMUM of six Saturday evenings over the year for some age groups and in other age groups, 3 at most. Transport is usually arranged for events that are a little further afield.

Home Galas

These also usually take place on a Saturday and are friendly Galas competing against other Clubs at our level. These provide excellent opportunities for new swimmers to experience competition on friendly ground.

Inter-house Galas

These are good fun and allow every age group the opportunity to swim. This is held at our home pool and is usually on one of the Club nights.

Both Home Galas and Inter-house Galas have no entry fee for spectators but rely on a raffle to assist in pool hire costs. Raffle Donations are always gratefully received and can be given to any of the committee members at any time through the year.

Christmas Fun Gala

This is exactly as labelled! We have nearly 100% attendance from our members and it is definitely 100% FUN…

Please note: Swimmers under the age of 9 are unable to compete in league Galas but are allowed to compete in our internal Club events

At all the above-mentioned events, help in organising the events is done voluntarily, as are the poolside officials. If you feel you can assist in any way, please speak to one of the poolside staff, we would be delighted to have your assistance.

The ULTIMATE AIM of KLSC is for every member to take away and treasure fond memories of their swimming Club days.
