Purpose / This unit standard is for people who work in the industrial textile fabrication industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify job details and select and lay out material; obtain dimensions for marking out; and measure and mark out material.

2Definition

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

Outcome 1

Identify job details and select and lay out material.

Evidence requirements

1.1Job details are identified, and material type is determined for each piece in accordance with job specifications and company requirements.

Rangejob specifications, sample, workplace directive.

1.2Material is selected from storage in accordance with company requirements.

1.3Material is laid out for measuring and marking in accordance with company requirements.

Rangemoving materials, manual handling, table, floor.

1.4Material is checked for faults and size to ensure it can accommodate the job in accordance with company requirements.

1.5Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangeincludes – personal safety; safety of other people; workshop safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety;

may include but is not limited to – knee pads.

Obtain dimensions for marking out.

2.1Overall sizes are established in accordance with job specifications.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – sketch, drawing, plan, sample, job specifications.

2.2Individual piece sizes are determined in accordance with job specifications.

2.3Allowances are applied to each piece in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeseams, hem stretch, shrinkage.

2.4Piece marking out dimensions are recorded in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeworkbook, job card.

2.5Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Outcome 3

Measure and mark out material.

Evidence requirements

3.1Layout of pieces is determined for the most economic use of material in accordance with company requirements.

Rangejob specifications, fabric and/or material characteristics.

3.2Pieces are measured and marked out on the selected material using an appropriate marker in accordance with company requirements.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – french chalk, felt pen, biro, pencil, chalkline.

3.3Piece alignment marks are applied in accordance with company requirements.

Rangepen, chalk, holes, cuts, nicks.

3.4Pieces are marked for product and assembly identification in accordance with company requirements.

3.5Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.
