Explanatory notes
1All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Resource Management Act 1991, Privacy Act 1993 and their subsequent amendments.
2Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the equipment and/or workplace.
3Dual arch web is excluded from this unit standard.
4Where reference is made to a ‘bridge’ this applies only to equipment configured with this feature.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Follow safety requirements for the equipment being used.
Rangeoperating manual, workplace practices.
Evidence requirements
1.1Equipment start up, shutdown and emergency procedures in the workplace are explained.
1.2Hazard control measures, as circulated by the company, are described and followed.
1.3Hazards or potential hazards in the workplace are identified and reported in accordance with workplace practices.
Outcome 2
Prepare equipment ready for presetting.
Evidence requirements
2.1Equipment is switched on following the sequence of switch-on routines and checks in accordance with workplace practices and equipment operating requirements.
2.2Rollers are confirmed as being at correct operating temperature and a paper gap test is carried out before adhesive is added.
2.3Steam is confirmed as being at the correct temperature to meet equipment operating requirements.
2.4Single facer or any components are confirmed as being free from any damage or deformation.
2.5Gelled adhesive is cleaned from adhesive trays and components in accordance with workplace practices.
2.6Adhesive trays that are capable of movement are set in position according to equipment operating requirements.
2.7Where steam showers are present, the operating level of steam pressure is confirmed in accordance with workplace practices and equipment configuration.
2.8Where steam showers are present, steam shower pipes are cleared of condensate and water.
Outcome 3
Set up the adhesive system.
Evidence requirements
3.1Adhesive circulation system is operated in accordance with workplace practices without interruptions and spills.
3.2Adhesive trays are cooled in accordance with workplace practices.
3.3Adhesive trays are filled evenly to the level required for equipment operation, ensuring that spills and splashes do not occur.
Outcome 4
Thread papers and set dams at the single facer.
Evidence requirements
4.1Papers are threaded according to the paper path required by equipment specifications, workplace practices, and job requirements.
Rangefree of paper jams or paper tear-offs; no snagging against equipment parts or frames.
4.2Where the bridge is present, papers are held by the bridge belt or incline belt.
4.3Adhesive dams are set at less than the width of the medium paper and ensuring that corrugator rollers are free of adhesive on start up.
Outcome 5
Set up the single facer.
Evidence requirements
5.1Equipment surfaces are clear of gelled adhesive and other foreign matter in accordance with workplace practices.
Rangemay include – corrugator rollers, pressure roller, pressure belt.
5.2Equipment designed to hold medium paper against corrugator rollers is operated in accordance with equipment specifications.
Outcome 6
Preset the single facer for web production.
Evidence requirements
6.1All gaps are set for the papers to be run in accordance with equipment specifications and workplace practices.
6.2Paper lubrication systems, where available on the equipment being operated, are set to run in accordance with workplace practice and equipment specifications.
Rangewax bars, oil mist sprays.
6.3Filled adhesive trays are placed in the level operating position.
Outcome 7
Prepare a broken web for joining, and make a web join.
Evidence requirements
7.1Designated corrugator crew are alerted to the presence of the joiner on the bridge in accordance with workplace practices.
7.2Cuts are made into fault free web ensuring that the web edges are cut straight to minimise weave when tape is applied.
7.3All pieces cut from the web are removed from the bridge.
7.4The web join is made ensuring the web at the single facer side is uppermost to prevent snagging.
7.5Web edges are aligned within 5mm at operator side and the entire length of the join is taped to ensure the join holds against the pull of the double backer.
Outcome 8
Demonstrate knowledge of ‘viscosity’.
Evidence requirements
8.1‘Viscosity’ is defined in terms of liquid flow.
8.2The reasons for measuring viscosity levels are explained and the problems associated with excessive and inadequate viscosity levels are described.
8.3The sequential steps in using the viscosity measuring device available in the workplace are described in accordance with workplace practices and manufacturer’s instructions.
8.4Conditions required to establish viscosity levels accurately are described in accordance with workplace practises.
Rangemust include the requirement for adhesive being tested to be free of foam and excessive aeration, and for all checks to be carried out at least twice to provide confirmation.
8.5The acceptable ranges of adhesive viscosity are described in terms of workplace practices.
Outcome 9
Use a viscosity measuring device.
Evidence requirements
9.1The known viscosity of water is confirmed by stopwatch and viscosity measuring device in accordance with workplace practices.
Range+ 0.5 seconds.
9.2The known viscosity of a sample adhesive is proved by stopwatch and viscosity measuring device.
Range+ 1 second.
