PurposePeople credited with this unit standard are able to: plan and carry out a dive to assess routine repair and maintenance requirements on a marine farm; plan and carry out a dive to undertake routine repair and maintenance on a marine farm; and complete recording and reporting requirements for the dive.

1Industry technical requirements and safety criteria are contained within the New Zealand Aquaculture Industry Diving Best Practice Guidelines 2004, available from Aquaculture New Zealand, Level 1, Wakatu House, Montgomery Square, Nelson 7010 ( This is referred to as the Diving Best Practice Guidelines in this unit standard.

2The assessment of element two must be carried out in underwater visibility conditions that are common for aquaculture industry diving.

3The candidate must complete two types of repair or maintenance tasks and explain both of these for each element of the unit standard. Repair and maintenance tasks may include but are not limited to – untangle weight system or anchor system, untangle equipment, replace sacrificial anode, replace shackle, cleaning activities, removal of bio-fouling, recover mortalities, attach air curtains, repairing nets, stitching sea cage drop panels.

4The assessment dive and the repair dive may be carried out at the same time.

5Definitions

Company requirements referto instructions to staff on policy and procedures that are communicated in an oral or written form. These must include the requirements of the Diving Best Practice Guidelines.

Legislation includes but is not limited to – the occupational diving related aspects of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

PADI refers to the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Plan and carry out a dive to assess routine repair and maintenance requirements on a marine farm.

Performance criteria

1.1The reasons for planning a dive to assess routine repair and maintenance requirements are explained in accordance with company requirements and safety criteria.

Rangesafety focus of divers, legislation.

1.2Potential hazards associated with the assessment of the repair and maintenance requirements and the remedial actions are explained.

Rangehazards may include but are not limited to – environmental hazards, marine organisms, limited visibility, disorientation, current strength, entanglement, strenuous activity;

evidence of fours hazards is required;

remedial actions include action taken to eliminate, isolate or minimise the hazard, such as – decision not to dive, decision not to recover object, access to safety equipment, communication plan, use of diver location device, emergency plan.

1.3The dive plan for the assessment of the repair and maintenance requirements is completed in accordance with company requirements and safety criteria.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – fitness and capability of the dive team, personnel numbers, surface conditions, diving platform and vantage points, in-water conditions, depth, equipment, bottom topography, communication signals.

1.4The dive to assess the repair and maintenance requirements is carried out in accordance with the dive plan and company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – the extent of repair and maintenance required, determination as minor or construction.

1.5The repair and maintenance requirements are reported to the dive supervisor in accordance with company requirements.

Element 2

Plan a dive to carry out routine repair and maintenance on a marine farm.

Performance criteria

2.1The plan includes the technique to be used for the repair and maintenance.

Rangeequipment, method of repair or maintenance, associated potential hazards.

2.2The dive plan for the repair and maintenance is completed in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – fitness and capability of the dive team, personnel numbers, surface conditions, diving platform and vantage points, in-water conditions, depth, equipment, bottom topography, communication signals.

Element 3

Carry out a dive to undertake routine repair and maintenance on a marine farm.

Performance criteria

3.1A pre-dive check is demonstrated in accordance with company requirements and safety criteria.

3.2The procedure for in-water disentanglement of a diver is explained in accordance with company requirements.

3.3The dive to complete the routine repair and maintenance is carried out in accordance with the dive plan and company requirements.

3.4Communication signals are given, received, and responded to as agreed in the dive plan.

Element 4

Complete recording and reporting requirements for the dive.

Performance criteria

4.1Recording and reporting requirements are completed in accordance with OSH and company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – personal logbook, company logbook, reporting schedule.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
