2018 SUMMER INTERNSHIP FUND STUDENT GUIDELINES & FAQs

Summer internships allow students to explore potential career paths, establish meaningful connections, and open doors to post-graduate employment. Recognizing the value of summer internships and the financial hardship posed by unpaid and underpaid (i.e. where compensation does not cover basic living expenses like food, lodging, etc.) summer experiences (particularly common in the non-profit and government sectors), the Office of Student and Post-Graduate Development (OSPGD) is pleased to announce and invite you to apply for either the General Summer Internship Fund or the Health/Medicine Internship Funds (Hershfield-Rosenthal and Rackow).

Please note that not all requests can or will be granted due to the limited funding available, and that preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received experiential funding from OSPGD.

Qualifications:

● Be a current, full-time first-year, sophomore or junior student in good standing with a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.7;

Have secured an unpaid or underpaid internship prior to applying for funding. Preference may be given to applicants who have secured unpaid versus underpaid opportunities.

● Have secured an opportunity requiring a minimum of 160 hours at one organization over at least four weeks which takes place between May and August 2018.

Deadlines and Notifications:

● Deadline 1 is Friday, March 9, 2018, by 4:30 p.m. (EST)

● Deadline 2 is Friday, April 13, 2018, by 4:30 p.m. (EST)

What funding can Pre-Health Students Apply for?

There are two sources of funding that Health Professions Advising (HPA) administers: The Hershfield-Rosenthal Internship Fund and the Eric C. Rackow, MD & and Sari Kaminsky, MD Endowed Achievement Scholarship.

How are students defined as “Pre-Health”?

Students will be identified based on prior appointments, HPA program participation and continued communication with the Health Professions Advising Office.

The Hershfield-Rosenthal fund provides support for student participation in off-campus summer opportunities in laboratory research projects at academic centers or non-commercial research institutions in the area of biomedical research.

The Eric C. Rackow, MD & and Sari Kaminsky, MD Endowed Achievement Scholarship is designed for pre-health students to receive funds to support research projects, community or service projects, internships, or to defray educational expenses. These experiences can be either on campus (within research) or off campus in an experience that a student submits for consideration. Students should provide thoughtful, well researched applications on how the particular experience will allow them to further explore their chosen Healthcare Profession.
