Welcome

Call to Worship

*God’s Greeting / Mutual Greeting

*Songs of Praise:

“Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” ~ Psalter Hymnal #253:1,2,4

“Crown Him With Many Crowns” ~ Psalter Hymnal #410

SERVICE OF FAITH

Statement of Faith: Our World Belongs to God #31 (in unison)

All: God gives this world many ways to know Him. The creation shows His power and majesty. He speaks through prophets, poets, and apostles, and, most eloquently, through the Son. The Spirit, active from the beginning, moved human beings to write the Word of God and opens our hearts to God’s voice.

Song: “Spirit of the Living God” ~ Psalter Hymnal #424

Moment for Missions: Prayer Card from Home Missions

Prayer for Our Service as Missionaries

Statement of Dedication: Our World Belongs to God #30 (in unison)

All: The Spirit gathers people from every tongue, tribe, and nation into the unity of the body of Christ. Anointed and sent by the Spirit, the church is thrust into the world, ambassadors of God’s peace, announcing forgiveness and reconciliation, proclaiming the good news of grace. Going before them and with them, the Spirit convinces the world of sin and pleads the cause of Christ. Men and women, impelled by the Spirit, go next door and far away, into science and art, media and marketplace—every area of life—pointing to the reign of God with what they do and say.

(Children are dismissed to Junior Church)

Sermon Notes:

Acts 17:16-34—Paul Preaching to the Elites

“The What:” All of us are missionaries. We carry a message

How: Contextualization—Building Bridges between the world and the gospel.

Paul’s Heart (v.16-17)

Do idolatrous things in our communities make us scoff or run away? Or do they break our hearts and prompt us to engage?

Paul engages in dialogue.

à You will not get an audience with someone if you are only talking at a person.

Paul’s Message (v.22-29)

Preaching the gospel both Confronts & Completes the cultural expectations.

Paul’s Impact (v.18-21 & 32-34)

Is Paul “the babbler” successful in this missional pit-stop??

God is bigger than their notions and is near.

-Jesus demonstrates God’s judgment of the world through the Resurrection.

-The Areopagus was devoted to the idea that there was no resurrection!

-Scoffing is not a bad response = understanding of the ramifications of the resurrection.

*Do we live in a way that demonstrates the reality of the resurrection?
