2017SUMMER INTERNATIONAL WHITMAN INTERNSHIP GRANT

PROGRAM OUTLINE AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Who can receive a grant?International Whitman students with significant experience, awareness, familiarity or existing relationships with organizations or individuals outside of the United States. Students must be in good academic and conduct standing with the college. International students should communicate with Kyle Martz and Victoria Wolff before applying for a grant.
  • Program is primarily designed for 2nd and 3rd year Whitman studentswho will be enrolled at Whitman during the Fall 2017 semester and who have developed long-term professional goals, have clarity about their academic goals, or have established a direction to their studies and career plans.This program is notintended for students to begin an exploration of an issue, industry or part of the world about which they have only a basic curiosity.
  • Internships need to be high-impact, academically and professionally relevant experiences at non-profit, for-profit, and government offices outside the United States.
  • To qualify for the $3000 grant, the internship must be unpaid (standard deductions will be withheld); up to $2000 in additional funding for travel and housing expenses is available (studentsmust provide receipts to be reimbursed for these expenses).
  • The internship must last 8 weeks at 20 hours per week during Whitman’s summer break.
  • We fund internships on a competitive basis. We especially encourage applications from students who have not received an internship grant before.If you have already received two SEC-funded Summer WIGs, your application cannot be considered for funding this time.
  • If awarded a grant, students will need to file an Optional Practical Training (OPT) application with the US government. Whitman Internship Grant funding is contingent on successful OPT application.
  • The SEC will invite applicants to in-person interviews within a week of the deadline and will announce grant recipients no later than February 15th, 2017.
  • Students’ safety and security are of foremost importance. Therefore, internships must be at organizations, businesses or government agencies that 1) are established and financially secure with websites that instill confidence in the reader, and2) have a connection to Whitman (via a member of a Board, staff, faculty, alumni or parent).
  • Both the applicant and the applicant’s parent or guardian arerequired to sign a release form.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to acquire a visa if necessary, as well health and travel insurance.

3-STEP APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Find an internship
  2. Talk to your potential supervisor and determine the scope of the internship (job description, intended work schedule, and supervisory/evaluation process).
  3. Giveyour supervisor the “Supervisor Information” sheet, which outlines their responsibilities (p. 3). If necessary, please translate the document for them.
  4. Have supervisor sign the “Student-Supervisor Contract” and sign it yourself (p. 4). If necessary, please translate the document for them.
  5. Fill out the following Google form (log in to Whitmail to access)
  6. Fill out the application and email it to (ONE EMAIL with THREE DOCUMENTS)
  7. Document 1: A PDF or Word document that includes short answers (2 pages), additional information (1 page), and your resume (1 page) and, if applicable, the optional budget request (1 page).
  8. Document 2: A signed and scanned Student Supervisor Contract as a PDF (you can use the library scanner to turn it into a PDF).
  9. Document 3: A signed and scanned Unaccompanied Student International Internship Release Form as a PDF (you can use the library scanner to turn it into a PDF).

Applicants must submit all four components (Google form, application, contract, and release form) to be considered.

SUPERVISOR INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR SUPERVISORS

The funds for the Whitman Internship Grant are allocated by Whitman College. Each student who is selected to receive a funding grant will receive $3000 (standard deductions will be withheld) and additional financial support for travel and housing expenses.

Students are eligible for this grant the summer following their sophomore or junior year, and in a few cases, after their first year here at Whitman or during their senior year if they are planning on returning to Whitman in the fall following the summer. They must be in good academic and conduct standing with Whitman College. International students applying for this grant will need to be granted OPT status by the US government before they can receive funding from Whitman.

GUIDELINES FOR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES

  1. Internships must be relevant to the educational goals and/or career interests of the student.
  1. A student may not work for a relative.
  1. In order to qualify for the grant, the internship must be unpaid.
  1. Students must answer short answer questions as part of the application. The committee evaluating the applications will be putting a great deal of weight on how the student describes the proposed internship. You can help with this by providing the student with information about the organization, a description of their responsibilities, how they will be trained, criteria and method of evaluation, how they will receive feedback, and the amount of time they will spent with their supervisor.
  1. Supervisors must sign the 2017Summer International Whitman Internship Grant Student-Supervisor Contract in support of the proposed internship position.
  1. Supervisors are expected to provide regular feedback (e.g. written, email, in-person)

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The internship must last for 8 weeks during Whitman’s summer break for 20 hours per week.

Students need to work a total of 160 hours during the summer.

Students studying abroad before or after the intended internship need to contact their study abroad program as well as the embassy/consulate to insure that they can combine an internship and study abroad experience.The SEC does not handle the visa process and the health insurance process. Students are responsible for their own visas and health insurance.

Note: Passports need to be valid for 6 months beyond the date the student plans to return to the U.S. after the internship ends.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS

To maximize your chances for funding, please carefully review the following criteria on which proposals will be evaluated and prioritized. (Note – part of the experience of this internship is the application process, so the quality, thoughtfulness and accuracy of your application will be taken into consideration!)

  1. You must have been offered the internship before you can apply for the International Whitman Internship Grant.
  1. Applications are evaluated for clarity and presentation. Details, well-wrought sentences, and understandable explanations will increase your chances of being funded. Proofread before you submit your application!
  1. Your proposed internship must be relevant to your educational goals or career interests. The majority of your internship should be spent in activities designed to stimulate learning and gain experience.
  1. You should receive consistent feedback and guidance from your supervisor. Include the criteria for evaluation as well as how often and what type of feedback your supervisor will give.
  1. Evidence of your initiative and commitment to the position is also important. In your application you should describe how you researched, developed and obtained the position.
  1. Your supervisor mustread the entire application and sign the contract.
  1. Applications must be typed on a computer.
  1. Short answer questions should be original work.Do not copyinformation from the organization’s web site or position description.
  1. A relative may not supervise the internship.
  1. If you have previously worked in the internship or with the organization, you must demonstrate an increase in responsibility from previous experience.
