ACONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OFREVEREND CARL N. HARRIS OF HORRYCOUNTYAND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Reverend Carl Harrisat the age of eighty-one on Wednesday, March 29, 2017; and
Whereas, born in Unionon November 24, 1935, he was a son of the late Nick and Irene Harris, and when he accepted Jesus as his Savior in 1953, he felt the call of God to become a preacher; and
Whereas, Reverend Harris graduated from Union High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Wofford College, and after he attended Emory University Chandler School of Theology, he served in the United Methodist Conference for forty-four years; and
Whereas, he served as pastor of Carlisle United Methodist Church and Gilliam United Methodist Church in Union, St. Andrews United Methodist Church and St. Mark United Methodist Church in Spartanburg, Landrum United Methodist Church in Landrum, Loris First United Methodist Church in Loris, St. Paul United Methodist Church in Florence, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Orangeburg, and First United Methodist Church in Conwaywhere he retired; and
Whereas, afterReverend Harris retired, he formed the Second Mile Evangelistic Association in 2001 and the Loris Interfaith Task Force in 2002; and
Whereas, he also served as the interim pastor for Loris Presbyterian Church, Loris First Baptist Church, Beulah Baptist Church, Camp Swamp United Methodist Church, and Olyphic Baptist Church; and
Whereas, Reverend Harris served as the chairman of South Carolina Conference Board of Evangelism;president of Nation Congress of Evangelism, World Methodist Council;chairman of the Board of TMS; and president of Second Mile Evangelism. He was a delegate to the International Congress World Evangelization in Lausanne, Switzerland; a delegate to Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference;and an affiliate member of the General Board of Discipleship; and
Whereas, together with his beloved wife of sixty years, Shirley Gault Harris, he reared three fine children: Mark Harris, Rhett Harris, and Carla Blackburn. They blessed him with the affection of six adoring grandchildren: Nicholas Harris, Amy Davis, Carlyn Harris, Ashley Harris, Anna Harris, and John Mark Harris; and two greatgrandchildren, Lane and Emory Harris; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the exemplary life and legacy of Carl Harris and for the example of sacrifice and kindness he set for all who knew him. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
Thatthe members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing ofReverend Carl N. Harris of Horry County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his large and loving family and his many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Reverend Carl N. Harris.
