INITIATIVES

The employment unit engaged in the following broad outreach initiatives in accordance with various elements of FCC Rule 73.2080(c)(2):

Established an internship program designed to assist members of the community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment. / KPFT has continued to work with the colleges and universities and high schools to provide internships to students interested in broadcast employment. We continue to host interns from the University of Houston Clear Lake Campus (1 student in the programming department). Interns are taught a variety of broadcast skills, including broadcast writing, digital editing, group collaboration and administrative functions, in the interest of supporting their future endeavors and employment in broadcasting.
Established training programs designed to enable station personnel to acquire skills that could qualify them for higher level positions. / Employees attended the National Federation of Community Broadcasters annual conference. Various trainings and workshops were attended during the conference that enhanced the skills needed to improve broadcasting as well as provided skills to enhance their job performance and give them skills to move into other positions.
Participated in at least 4 events or programs sponsored by educational institutions relating to career opportunities in broadcasting. / KPFT worked with the University of Houston to employ students who were interested in broadcast journalism from their work-study program. In addition, the General manager delivered a presentation (4/15/15) at the University of St. Thomas on media and broadcasting and opportunities available in broadcasting.
Provided training to management level personnel on methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and prevent discrimination. / The General Manager attended (3/19/16) a workshop on Non-violent communication in the workplace.
Participated in other activities designed by the station employment unit reasonably calculated to further the goal of disseminating information as to employment opportunities in broadcasting to job candidates who might otherwise be unaware of such opportunities. / The station continues to provide free news trainings.This year it was provided to 4 people. The station conducts these trainings throughout the year as needed. The individuals that are trained usually continue to do some work for the station in the News Department.
The station also continues to provide one-on-one Board Operator training.
