2016-2017The Les and Elaine Hall Water Environmental Stewardship Fund Scholarship

The North Carolina American Water Works Association and the North Carolina Water Environment Association (NC AWWA-WEA) is a volunteer association dedicated to providing water and wastewater education, training, and service in an effort to protect public health and the environment.

Les Hall worked as a consulting engineer on water issues for about forty years. During his career, he developed a passion for learning and promoting education of future water professionals. After his retirement in 2010, he and his wife, Elaine, decided that providing financial assistance to engineering students who are pursuing a degree in engineering with a concentration in the water environment would be one way to ensure that these students will have the knowledge to solve the issues that they will encounter during their careers.

Eligibility

  • Awarded to a rising college Junior who is studying engineering with a concentration in the water environment in an ABET accredited engineering curriculum at one of the UNC Campuses
  • Student must have maintained a GPA of greater than 3.0.
  • Student must be a US citizen and a resident of North Carolina
  • Student must not be related to scholarship sponsors nor employed by such sponsors and not an employee of nor related to officer or director of NAWWA-WEA, nor to any member of the Endowment Committee
  • Preference will be given to students who are members of a student chapter of NC AWWA-WEA

Value

  • One $1,000.00 scholarship will be awarded
  • The recipient may receive the scholarship annually through his/her senior year and up to two years of post graduate studies by documenting that he/she continues to meet the qualifications stipulated in the initial award of the scholarship.
  • Award recipient will qualify for free registration for the Annual NC AWWA-WEA Conference each year in which he/she is awarded the scholarship.

How to Apply
In ONE envelope, applicants must submit:

  • Recommendation of college instructors (At least two, one must be in engineering). These should be in sealed envelopes signed by the instructors
  • Essay discussing reasons for choosing a career in engineering with a focus on the water environment and what contributions the applicant hopes to make that will improve the water environment. (Maximum 800 words)
  • Official college transcript with university seal
