Updates by Pres John

- Samaritan Center – New Year’s Day lunch – call Michelle Burnett to sign up for the 1st day lunch.

- Canastota RC – Wine Tour on Valentine’s Day - $40 pp. Call the Club directly.

- Mark Strodel reported that we have collected over $4,500 and more is expected. Overall, the Christmas Bureau program exceeded $41,000 and the Ancient Order of Hibernians did another box office business of $14,000. He thanked everyone who helped out.

- Dave Ziemba reminded everyone that Salvation Army’s Bell Ringing is coming up on Dec. 18 and 19 at Shoppingtown. Slots are open on Friday (6 -8 PM) and on Saturday (4 -6 PM). Remember to bring your Jimmy Jars.

- Sue Reisman asked that all members consider a contribution to Jay Wilkin father’s charities of choice.

- Joe McCarthy reminded us that on Dec. 22 the Salvation Army will have its 3,200 family food and gifts distribution event. Many volunteers are needed for this remarkably efficient undertaking that distributes thousands of valued gifts to nearly 6,000 persons AND allows the recipients to hand-pick some of their gifts. To help, call Lynne at 479-1321 to help for two hours between 1 and 7 PM.

- Rabbi Victor announced that he is leading a group of temple students on a weeklong trip to New Orleans to help in the rebuilding effort after Katrina.

- Judge Jack noted that he presided over County Legislator Linda Ervin’s swearing-in ceremony (19th District) over the weekend.

- Pres John and numerous members attended the calling hours for Secretary Wilkin’s father’s funeral.

Program

Leo Eisner introduced Coach Steve Evans, head men’s basketball coach of LeMoyne College and Union College alumni.

Steve explained that he had served as assistant coach at several schools and had climbed the ladder to Division I – Northwestern University when he had a chance to come home and lead LeMoyne. He grabbed at the opportunity and now – 10 years later – is quite pleased but not complacent.

The Dolphins have had much success in basketball (2008 finalist) but, most importantly, is helping to shape the lives of these young men. With little fanfare and less money, Steve has been able to recruit competitive yet not “proven” ballplayers who are able to grow into their roles as DII players and students.

As to their historic win over SU last month, he said it is a mixed blessing. They now are the team to beat and he has to re-motivate his players some of whom are feeling like they’ve accomplished all that they wanted. A most difficult position early in a season!

LeMoyne basketball is webcast. Look on their website for a schedule and come up to the Heights to see a game. Unlike other colleges, parking is free, all on the level and tickets prices low, and great basketball is the rule.

Respectfully Submitted,

Dick Robb
