·  We must provide a safe, caring and respectful environment to promote high scholar achievement, academic excellence and emotional wellness.

·  Scholars should be challenged to become confident, self-directed, lifelong learners by creating high expectations for excellence in learning.

·  All scholars deserve a relevant, challenging curriculum that incorporates various instructional methods and accommodates different learning styles

·  Parents are the champions for their children and teachers are facilitators for their scholars.

·  The teachers’ role is to facilitate activities designed to meet the needs of each child.

River Oaks Academy SMART Goals

·  Provide a duty-free lunch period for every teacher on a daily basis.

·  Provide duty-free instructional planning time for every teacher under G.S. 115C-105.27 and -301.1, with the goal of proving an average of at least five hours of planning time per week, to the maximum extent that the safety and proper supervision of students may allow during regular student contact hours.

·  Provide a positive school climate, under CMS regulation JICK-R, by promoting a safe learning environment free of bullying and harassing behaviors.

·  Increase average student growth in Reading and Math so they are College and Career Ready (4’s/5’s), by 20%+ as measured by the CMS MAP Benchmark/Summative EOG/MSL assessments

·  Increase average student growth in Science, by 20% +, so they are College and Career Ready (4’s/5’s) as measured by the CMS MSL and EOG assessments, while developing community and parent connections with the Catawba River District and parents through a STEM focused partnership

River Oaks Academy Profile

Our mission at River Oaks Academy is to empower scholars to reach their maximum potential to become successful and competitive within the global community. Our motto, “Empowering Scholars for Academic Excellence”, serves as a reminder to the school community that our goal is to ensure that our scholars are given the tools to meet with success wherever life may lead them. This is evidenced in the collaborative team efforts of our staff, PTA, and our commitment to establish business partnerships, as we provide scholars with optimal opportunities to excel academically, behaviorally, and socially in a learning environment that is reflective of the high expectations set by the adjoining groups.

ROA is a diverse Title I school, with approximately 650 scholars. We have an ethnic population of 68.3% African American, 18.5% Caucasian, 3.5% Asian, 12.7% Hispanic, and 2.6% multi-racial. Further, we have 4.1% of our students identified as LEP, 9.2% Exceptional, 1.7% Gifted, and 72+% ED.

In kindergarten, we have 4 classes, averaging 21 students each; first grade-5 classes averaging 20 students; second grade-5 classes, averaging 20 students; K-1 Multi-age- class averaging 21 students; third grade-5 classes averaging 23 students; fourth grade-4 classes, averaging 27 students; and fifth grade-5 classes, averaging 22 students.

This school year begins with its scholars at 37%/54% in Reading and 38%/45% in Math based on 14-15 data, though that includes the 5th graders that have moved on to middle school.
