SCOPE / This procedure describes the proper handling and operation of a CO2 Fire Extinguisher.
HEALTH
Special PPE & Special Hazards / Standard PPE – Fire retardant coveralls, hard hat, safety glasses with rigid side shields, gloves and work boots.
SAFETY / Care must be taken because CO2 is under pressure.

1.0 Check Extinguisher / · Verify that seal has not been broken.2.0 Activate Extinguisher / · Break plastic seal.
· Pull pin from handle
WARNING
Do not point horn at anyone. Because of extreme cold from discharging extinguisher, do not put hands on horn.
3.0 Test Operation of Extinguisher / · Pick up extinguisher by the handle.
· Grip handle of horn.
· Hold hose and horn away from body.
· Squeeze the operating lever to test the extinguisher.
CAUTION
You may feel some kickback from nozzle.
NOTE: The operating lever should not be used to regulate CO2 flow. It should be full On or Off.
4.0 Using Fire Extinguisher / · Attack the fire from a safe distance up wind.
· Activate the extinguisher and direct CO2 at the base of the fire in a sweeping motion.
· Release operating lever and back away when fire is extinguished or extinguisher is empty.
5.0 Material Use / · CO2 extinguishers are used on Class B and C fires.
