2015-2016 Class Officer Application

Before you run for a CLASS OFFICE, please read below…

The Class Councils are formed to implement projects, raise money, and promote spirit for their specific class. The Student Government Association (SGA) works for the benefit of the school as a whole. Officers of both types of organizations should openly communicate to work together for the betterment of the whole school.

Class Officers should be people who are willing to work toward these goals and be able to lead others to do so. The year will be what the officers and representatives make of it. Good luck!

ALL OFFICERS must be committed to their Class Council. Each officer must…

·  Be academically eligible (a 2.0 GPA with no more than one failing grade at the end of third quarter)

·  Be willing to make all Class Council endeavors high priorities in their busy schedules

·  Attend meetings after school and at lunch

·  Give and receive constructive input to peers, advisors, and SGA

·  Complete to the best of your ability the duties and responsibilities assigned by the Class Constitution, MCPS Policies and Procedures, advisor, and/or school administrators

SPECIFIC OFFICER Expectations:

·  President: Be committed and dedicated to ALL aspects of their class. Write agendas, conduct meetings, delegate responsibilities = run the show! The Class Council’s success is your success!

·  Vice President: Second in command. Assists president in all endeavors. Serves as president in his/her absence.

·  Treasurer: Keeps track of expenditures and income on a spreadsheet. Lead person in fundraising.

·  Secretary: Keeps minutes of formal and informal meetings. Types proposals or letters relevant to Class Council. Lead correspondent with student body (writing announcements, creating flyers, etc.)

·  Historian(s): Keeps track of major class events

1.  Collects pictures, keeps a sample flyer, and writes down stories that happened during class events. Maintains a “scrapbook” for the class.

2.  Collects digital photos and creates a presentation each year that will be used at events/banquets. Each year’s collection will be put together to make a CD that will be available to seniors during their graduation year.


Campaign Information

April 20, 2015: Application packets are available in the main office, from your class advisor, and from Ms. Wang, the SGA advisor in room 207A.

April 29, 2015: Applications due to class advisor!

·  11th Grade: Ms. Borst

·  10th Grade: Ms. Calarusse

·  9th Grade: Ms. Vicinelly or Ms. Sears

May 1, 2015: Mandatory meeting: approved applicants will be notified

May 6, 2015: Campaign posters due to the Main Office by 2:30pm for approval

May 6-15, 2015: Taping of 30-60 second speeches

a.  Sign up for a time slot with Mr. Ormsby in the Media Center before this date!

May 11, 2015: Campaigning begins; this is the first day posters can be hung up

May 18-22, 2015: Speeches will be air during the morning announcements

May 26-28, 2015: Voting will occur in all Social Studies classes

a.  Candidates must win the position by a majority vote

b.  In the event of a tie, students will be requested to vote again

c.  Voting will take place on Chromebooks in the classroom by using student IDs

May 28, 2015: All posters and campaign materials must be removed by 2:30pm

June 1, 2015: Election results will be announced


Election Guidelines

Posters:

·  Candidates are allowed five (5) posters:

o  One poster MUST hang in the main lobby area OR main stairwell.

o  Posters may be put up throughout the school, including the cafeteria, gym hallways, and auditorium entrance.

o  Posters may be put up beginning May 11, 2015 and must be removed by May 28, 2015 by 2:30pm

o  The Main Office must approve ALL flyers, posters, and election materials PRIOR to distribution. Submit to the Main Office by May 6, 2015 at 2:30pm

·  Your name and picture (if desired) and the office for which you are a candidate

·  Your mission statement

·  3 goals you have for your Class

·  Candidates may NOT post any flyers

Publicity:

·  As part of your campaign, you should have items to hand out (ex. business cards/candy)

·  A table will be provided at lunch for you to hand out your campaign materials

o  Materials should include a brochure or sheet with your campaign information; remember that any materials handed to your classmates must be approved by the Main Office

Speeches:

·  Must be taped by May 15, 2015. Sign up for a time slow in the media center with Mr. Ormsby.

·  Your speeches will air on the morning show May 18-22, 2015

·  Speeches must be approved prior to taping—submit a typed transcript attached to the back of this application

·  Speech length should be no less than 30 seconds, and no more than 1 minute

·  Candidates should practice prior to taping day
