2014 City of Sherrill Summer Concert Series
Sponsored by the Gorman Foundation
The Sherrill Summer Concert Series is back starting Tuesday, June 24 and running through Tuesday, August 26. Concerts begin at 6:30pm in the Reilly-Mumford Memorial Park gazebo, except for fireworks night when the concert will start at 7:30pm. In the event of heavy rain the concert will be moved to the Community Activity Center (CAC) gym on East Hamilton Avenue. Bring lawn chairs and blankets and in the case of light rain, an umbrella. Come out and enjoy the beautiful summer evenings with your neighbors.
June 24 Grupo Pagan-Diverse backgrounds create a high energy blend of sounds guaranteed to grab the ear, featuring originals plus covers by the likes of Santana, Sade, and Shakira.
July 1 George Wesley-Travel to a summer in a far away exotic locale without leaving Sherrill as the sounds of reggae return to the Reilly-Mumford Memorial Park.
July 8 Party Nuts/Free Ice Cream Night-It’s always a party when the Party Nuts come to town, featuring an evening of golden oldie rock ‘n’ roll sing-alongs that encourage plenty of audience participation. There’s a bonus treat- free ice cream for all kids and kids at heart.
July 15 Dan Elliott and the Monterays-The #1 oldies group and longest running band in Central New York bring to the Sherrill stage all the favorites from the 1950s to the 1980s.
July 22 Coston-Oneida-based guitar virtuoso Roy Coston is joined by his 16-year-old drummer prodigy son Gunnar Coston and Sherrill’s own concert series emcee Mike Jaquays on bass for their first visit to the Sherrill stage, delivering classic rock from artists like Ted Nugent, Foreigner, Pat Travers, and KISS. As a bonus, they will be joined at this show by the legendary Mike “MJ Bombsquad” SantaLucia on lead vocals, plus the Gorman Foundation’s own Joanne Larson will take over emcee duties for the evening!
July 26 Fireworks Night with Fritz’s Polka Band-Our annual fireworks night adds even more excitement to the fiery show of Fritz and crew as they perform their upbeat and fun polkas, waltzes, country, and rock ‘n’ roll tunes sure to get the audience on their feet. Note: This concert starts at 7:30pm, with fireworks to follow.
July 29 Matt Chase and the Thunder Canyon Band- There will be modern country and oldies rock ‘n’ roll on stage this evening courtesy of these perennial Sherrill favorites. Make sure you stay to the end for their heartfelt patriotic tribute.
August 5 Causeway Giants-This Syracuse-based Celtic rock band has a flare for the sounds of the Irish, putting new spins on traditional music, adding in some originals and covering bands like Flogging Molly, The Dropkick Murphies, and The Young Dubliners.
August 12 Joe Angerosa as Elvis-With a sound-alike performance and authentic costumes, this Utica-based crooner channels the timeless classics from the king of rock ‘n’ roll.
August 19 Plastic Soul-Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ arrival in the states with this group making their debut on the Sherrill stage this year. Their note-perfect renditions of the classics from the Fab Four will take the audience along on a Magical Mystery Tour back to the psychedelic days of the 1960s.
August 26 Chief Big Way-Taking a break from his world tours with Anthrax, Joey Belladonna teams with musicians extraordinaire Joe Precourt and Dave Mickelson in a power trio playing the best classic rock, featuring the likes of Journey, Pink Floyd, Bad Company, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Department of Public Works Reminders
- Residents are asked to note the following 2014 date changes for garbage pick-up:

Additionally, garbage pick-up in the Village of Vernon changes from Thursdays to Tuesdays on the following dates- November 27 changes to November 25, December 25 changes to December 23, January 1 changes to December 30.
-Garbage and Recycling- The DPW will no longer pick up garbage or recycling in containers that are larger than 32 gallons. Please make sure that garbage and recycling are placed in 10-32 gallon containers, garbage weighs less than 40 lbs. and recycling weighs less than 20 lbs.
-Brush and Green Waste Information- Green waste which includes grass and leaves must be separated from brush which includes sticks and limbs when set out for pick-up or when dropped off at the DPW garage. They must be separated because green waste is used for compost and brush is taken to a facility to be chipped. Brush must be no longer than six feet and no wider than twelve inches. Soil and rocks are not accepted.
-Brush and Green Waste Pick-Up- Every other Monday- June 2, June 16, June 30, July 14, July 28, August 11, August 25, September 8, September 22, October 6, October 20. Please wait until the weekend before pickup to put out brush.
-Transfer Station Schedule- Wednesdays 3:30-5:30pm, Saturdays 8am-1pm
-Compost- There is compost at the end of Fairway Lane that residents can take to use. At times there may be woodchips as well.
-Street Resurfacing- The following streets will be resurfaced: Sherrill Rd from Noyes Blvd to Hamilton Ave, East Hamilton Ave from Marble St to Murphy St, Gordon Ave from School St to Park Ter, Allen St from Hamilton Ave to Campbell Ave. The skating rink will also be resurfaced.
Shredding and Bulky Rigid Plastics Collection- Saturday September 6, 10am-12pm- Bring any paper you need shredded to the DPW parking lot, 121 Elmwood Place for this free event. No need to remove paper clips or staples. Folders and envelopes are okay too. Also, drop off bulky rigid plastics such as garbage cans and old lawn furniture. Police Department Reminders
-For emergencies call 911, to file a police report call 363-3200, to leave a message for an officer call 363-6221. Please do not call City Hall about police matters.
-Please remember that quiet hours are from 10pm-7am.
-Please remember that fireworks are illegal.
-Motorists are reminded to be aware of increased pedestrian traffic and to be on the lookout for pedestrians, bicycles, skateboarders and rollerbladers.
-Pedestrians are encouraged to use sidewalks.
-At night bikes are required to have lights.
-There is a leash law. Also please pick up after your dogs.
-Parents- If your children skateboard or rollerblade, please make sure they keep ramps/jumps off citystreets. This interferes with traffic and could cause an accident. Also- children under the age of 14 are required to wear a helmet when riding a bike or rollerblading.
-Please remember to lock your vehicles at all times in your driveways, on city streets, and in parking lots.
-Residents going on vacation or leaving for any extended period are encouraged to check in with the PoliceDepartment for a home security check.
-Please note it is illegal to have ear buds in both ears or headphones on both ears while driving an automobile.
From the Fire Department
-Fireworks and Chicken BBQ- Summer is here and that brings the Sherrill Fireworks Display July 26 and the fire department’s Chicken BBQ. The department would like to thank everyone for their support of the BBQs in the past and we hope you join us on the 26th.
-100th Anniversary- Join the Sherrill-Kenwood Volunteer Fire Dept August 23 from 1-4pm as we celebrate our 100th Anniversary. We have invited area fire departments for a Fire Truck show, there will be local food vendors, an inflatable fire truck bouncy house and an open house. Please come and share in this incredible milestone!
Outdoor Cooking-Gas Grills, Turkey Fryers and Smokers-Please use caution when using your outdoor cookers and locate them a safe distance from all structures when in use. Backyard grilling can be an enjoyable but it can also quickly turn tragic if left unattended. Please do not use gas grills, turkey fryers and smokers on porches or decks that are attached to the house and check all hoses to be sure they are in working condition and not cracked with dry rot.

2014 City of Sherrill Playground Program- Monday June 30-Friday July 25, Weekdays 9am-12pm, *No Playground July 4- The program will be held again this year at the CAC and is open to children entering kindergarten-sixth grade who attend E.A. McAllister Elementary School. There are lots of great activities planned. Registration forms will be distributed at school in June and will also be available at City Hall. Children must bring their registration and medical authorization forms with them to the program or they may be dropped off at City Hall or the CAC ahead of time. Sciensational Workshops For Kids- - Caitlin Peterson, an experienced local teacher, will offer fun, hands-on science-centered educational workshops for elementary school kids at the CAC. July workshops will take place after the Summer Playground program. Kids participating in playground are invited to bring a lunch to eat before the workshop starts. Each workshop costs $175 and price includes all materials and supplies. A minimum of 8 children are needed with a maximum of 20 and you have 6 working days prior to a workshop to register. -Can You Dig It?July 7-11, 12:30-3:30pm, Ages 6-11, Children will partake in a simulated fossil excavation, uncovering the different bones of a dinosaur.
-CSI-Crime Scene Investigation- July 14-18, 12:30-3:30pm,Ages 8-12, Children will learn about forensics, crime scene investigations, and crime lab chemistry as they perform as many as 15 different experiments designed to show just how tricky those cases are!
-Harry Potter- August 18-22, 9am-12pm, Ages 6-11,

Movie Night Friday July 25 at Dusk- Bring lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy a movie under the stars on the CAC lawn. The movie will be suitable for all ages. Email ideas to and look for the announcement on the city website.
Bowling Leagues- The bowling leagues listed below are looking for bowlers for Fall 2014! Call the CAC, 363-6525 for more information.

-Thursday Night Women’s Doubles League- Non-Sanctioned, Join a fun evening of bowlingstarting in September after Labor Day and finishing by mid March. An organizational meeting will be scheduled in August.

Sunday Night Juniors League- Sanctioned- For students 12-18 years old.

-Oneida County Office for the Aging- On the first Wednesday of every month at 11am a representative from the office is at the CAC and is able to provide people ages 60 and over, and people of any age with disabilities, with many services.
-CAC Craft and Chat Group- Join this group the first, third and fifth Wednesday of each month, 11am-1pm, to knit, sew, or create any other craft. Buy lunch at the CAC or bring your own.
State Fair Bus Trip- The City of Sherrill is partnering with the City of Oneida to offer a trip to the NYS Fair Monday August 25. Transportation will be on a school bus and more details will be available on the website soon. Contact Sara Getman, 363-6525 with questions.

Important Reminders
-Children under 10 years old must be accompanied by caregivers who are at least 14 years old.
-The phone at the pool is an unlisted number. In emergency situations City Hall can get in touch with the pool.

Sherrill Merchants Association News
2nd Annual Garage Sale on CAC Lawn- The Sherrill Merchants Association is holding a city-wide garage sale July 26, 8am-1pm. There is a $10 charge per space for Sherrill-Kenwood residents and $13 for non-residents. The application can be found on the city website and the Sherrill Merchants website Applications must be returned to NBT Bank before July 24 or until spaces are sold out. Let us do the advertising! 4th Annual 9/11 Memorial- The Sherrill Merchants Association has 25 flags for sale, for $30 each, to honor family or friends. Flags purchased this year will be for donation only. Flagswill not be offered for pick-up. Re-tags are for sale for the flags that were donated the last three years. If you purchased a flag and donated it you may purchase a new tag with the same information for $10. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to the City of Sherrill 9-11 Memorial Fund. Opening in Sherrill on April 30, 1994, Ebeneezer's original owners & family members have been there from the start. Evan & Kathy's dream was to open the only ice cream parlor in the area and it grew from there! Now a full-service restaurant, the cafe is open for lunch Monday-Saturday, 11am-3pm, and Friday for dinner, 4-8:30pm. Take out is available. The Ice Cream Parlor is open 7 days a week until 9pm. Oneida Community Mansion House News
-Visit the Oneida Community Mansion House for free during New York State’s Path Through History Weekends, June 7-8 14-15. Over 100 special events are planned at venues throughout the state. These weekends are designed to make it easy to experience the Empire State’s rich heritage and diverse attractions.
-On Sunday, June 22 enjoy a fun day during Strawberry Jam, a Mansion House Friends event to benefit the Oneida Community Mansion House. There will be a flea market in The Vineyard across from the Mansion House at 10am and spaces to sell goods are available for $10. From 12-4pm, food and beverages will be available at the Mansion House and there will be live music and a bake sale featuring desserts prepared with strawberries.
