2014-2015Oakton High School Activities Office Winter Newsletter – updated 11-5-14

Message from Pat Full, Director of Student Activities

I want to wish good luck to our many fall athletes as they go into postseason championship play. Go Cougars! With the winter season just around the corner, I want to welcome all future athletes and their families. We are set for another great season. Please review the information in this newsletter and go to for more information. I encourage everyone to get involved and want to thank you for your support of Oakton Athletics.

PHYSICALS: You must have a physical on file before not only tryouts but alsobefore preseason activity/conditioning/weight training. It must be done on the official 4-page VHSL formand must be dated after May 1, 2014. Go to and click on Files and Links to download the form. The physical is valid for all three seasons of the 2014-15school year. The physical form should be turned in to the Activities Office at least one week prior to tryouts/conditioning – do not hand it in to the coaches. Coaches will receive a list of athletes who have turned in a physical. Make a copy for your records before handing it in. You may mail it to Oakton High School, Activities Office, 2900 Sutton Rd., Vienna, VA 22181.

Concussion Education: Again, this year every athlete and one parent of every athlete must watch a short on-line presentation about concussions before tryouts. Last year’s data base has been cleared out (if you did it for a fall sport, your information is in the current data base). See below for the link.Once there, you will find a link for parents and a link for athletes. Your completion will go into a database that the Athletic Trainer will have access to. The Activities Office and the Athletic Trainer will use that database to confirm that the concussion component has successfully been completed by both the parent and the athlete. They will in turn relay this information to the coaches. The link is . You can also go to click on Announcements and follow the link to Concussion Presentation.

You will still need to turn in an Emergency Care Information form to the winter coaches – they do not have access to the school emergency care information forms or the ones you turned into fall coaches.

Winter Sports Begin Nov. 10 (Registration is Wed., November 5)

The following winter sports are set to begin tryouts on Monday, November 10: basketball, girls gymnastics, wrestling, and swim/dive. Indoor track and field will begin November 17. Coaches will verify at this time that all the proper paperwork has been turned in and the concussion education component has been completed by both athletes and parents. Each student needs a doctor’s physical on file in the Activities Office in order to try out. (If you played a fall sport or had a physical done at Oakton in the spring, it is already on file.) The official 4-page VHSL physical form must be used. Each student also needs to give the coach a new FCPS Emergency Care Information Form. (The emergency care form you turned in at the beginning of the year or to another coach cannot be used.) Go to for forms. Call 703-319-2760 for more information. (ALL PHYSICAL FORMS SHOULD BE TURNED IN TO THE ACTIVITIES OFFICE BY October 30. PLEASE MAKE A COPY FOR YOURSELF BEFORE TURNING IT IN.
