Sharon Williams, President, called the Association back into session at 7:05 p.m., Thursday, May 2, 2013, for the purpose of announcing the results of the elections and Association Awards.

President Williams recognized special guest SASFAA President, Jeff Dennis, and his wife, Cheryl for celebrating 32 years of marriage and gave a special thank you for attending our conference this year. She also recognized birthdays, as well as, Kevin Ammons and Marcus Byrd for completing the Alabama Community College Leadership Academy.

President Williams called upon Debra “Dee” Talley to present the check to this year’s sponsored charity, KidOne.

Dee Talley gave a special thanks to the Executive Board, AASFAA membership, Nathan Basford and the FAFSAA membership and Jeff Dennis for making our first sponsored charity a success. She presented Patrick Galloway of KidOne with a check from our Association for $1200.00. Patrick Galloway gave thanks on behalf of their 4000 clients, Board and staff.

President Willams called upon Past President, Vickie Adams, to give the Elections Results Report. The results are as follows:

Vickie Adams, Past President, made a motion to accept the nominations as elected to be affirmed by the membership. Buddy Jackson seconded the motion. President Williams called for the membership vote. The Ayes have it with no Nays and the motion carried.

Following the Election Results Report, President Williams recognized the first time attendees at the 2013 Spring Conference and thanked them for their attendance.

President Williams also allowed the Association to pause for a moment to recognize those members that may have expired since the spring meeting last year. We were happy to report that the Association did not lose any members last year.

President Williams expressed that each of the Executive Board and Committee Chairs would receive a group photo that was taken after lunch on Thursday, May 2, 2013, upon her return to the office.

At this time, President Williams recognized the Officers who served the Association for the 2012-2013 year and presented a plaque to the persons whose names are listed below:

Following this presentation, Past President, Vickie Adams, presented a special award on behalf of the Association to Sharon Williams who served the Alabama Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators as President for the 2012-2013 year.

After accepting the President’s award, Sharon Williams called for Michelle Thompson and Mike Reynolds to present a very special award – the Over Award.

After much deliberation and consideration of several possible recipients listed below the winners were announced.

The Over Award was presented to Phillip Nelson and Sharon Williams for signing a certificate with the wrong dates. Following this presentation, Ann Campbell, collected the $1.00 scholarship annual payment due for the previous Over Award recipients and from Phillip and Sharon. Francine Reeves is paid through this year.

President Williams announced the AASFAA Scholarships would be awarded to the following colleges and provided a brief history of the person for whom the scholarship was named. The scholarship recipients would be chosen at each college.

President Williams called upon Michelle Thompson to explain the random selection process. Michelle reported that numbers were drawn by our Exhibitors and then signed by the drawer. Ann Campbell then pulled the registration roster and matched the numbers to the registrant.

The following colleges were awarded the scholarships:

Shirley Spears – Amber Snell, Bishop State

Floyd Johnston – Tommy Wilson, Auburn University

Bill Gentry – Tharsteen Bridges, Concordia College

Theresa Duke – Betty Edwards, H.C. Trenholm State

Dr. William Wall – Renee Stanford, Athens State

President Williams reminded each winner to send the Treasurer, Ann Campbell, an invoice after July 1st to receive the institutional scholarship funds for 2013-2014.

President Williams shared with the Association that we will be celebrating the 34th Anniversary of the two highest awards bestowed annually by AASFAA.

The first award presented was the Hon H. Buchanan, Jr. Distinguished Service Award. The award was presented to Lissa Powell, USA Funds, with over 20 years of service and training.

Lissa Powell accepted the award and expressed her appreciation to the Association and many colleagues through the years.

President Williams requested that all past recipients of the M. Cecil Padgett Outstanding Achievement Award to come to the front of the room to be recognized.

The second award presented was the M. Cecil Padgett Outstanding Achievement Award. This award was presented to Amanda Sharp, former Assistant Director of the University of North Alabama. (The award had been approved by the Executive Board prior to Amanda moving to her new position as a NASFAA Trainer.)

Amanda accepted the award and shared with the members of the Association much shock and gratitude and thanks for this special award.

President Williams presented service proclamations signed by Alabama Governor, Robert Bentley to all of our retirees. The retirees were as follows:

President Williams presented a proclamation signed by Alabama Governor, Robert Bentley, to Amanda Sharp for her dedication and service to the Financial Aid Profession.

The awards portion of the program concluded this Business Meeting and was adjourned at 9:05 p.m. until the morning “Ask a Fed” session.
