Reviews into children’s specialised services

NHS England has announced more details of the accelerated national reviews into paediatric critical care and specialised surgery for children. The reviews, which are part of NHS England’s regular round of specialised commissioning service reviews, would normally take up to two years to complete, but have been fast tracked to run in parallel with other work on new nationally agreed standards for congenital heart disease.

Parent training may benefit children with severe autism

"A new form of therapy has for the first time been shown to improve the symptoms and behaviour of autistic children," The Guardian reports.

Parent-mediated social communication therapy for young children with autism (PACT): long-term follow-up of a randomised controlled trial

This RCT aimed to follow-up the Preschool Autism Communication Trial (PACT), to investigate whether the PACT intervention had a long-term effect on autism symptoms and continued effects on parent and child social interaction.

“What should I do?” NSPCC helplines: responding to children’s and parents’ concerns about sexual content online

This report looks at what children and parents are telling the NSPCC when they contact them with their concerns about online safety, specifically sexual content online. It focuses on viewing sexually explicit content; sharing sexual images; and online child sexual exploitation.

A review of the research on children and young people who display harmful sexual behaviour online

This review of the literature about online harmful sexual behaviour (HSB) was carried out to help inform and update guidance for practitioners working with children and young people with harmful sexual behaviour. The report brings together current research on the developmental appropriateness of children's sexual behaviour online and the comparison and cross-over between children and young people displaying online and offline HSB.

This rapid review of evidence of the impact on health outcomes of NHS commissioned health services demonstrates that there have been significant improvements in the quality of health care in prison settings. The review will inform future health interventions and prioritisation in England where there are further improvements to be made.

Attitudes to dementia: findings from the 2015 British Social Attitudes survey

This report outlines findings from a survey carried out by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) which examined public awareness of risk factors for dementia. It found that 28 per cent of the British public is unable to correctly identify any health and lifestyle factor that can increase the risk of developing dementia.

Evaluation of an intervention to prevent falls

This report, commissioned by the US Government, evaluates the effectiveness of an intervention designed to prevent falls in the elderly, with a particular focus on fall-related injuries and on health care costs. The researchers concluded that the intervention did not have a substantial effect on health care costs. Although they did not find evidence that the intervention reduced A&E visits for fall-related injuries, they cautioned that the study was underpowered for this outcome and that a clinically meaningful effect could have gone undetected.

Efficiency opportunities through health and social care integration: delivering more sustainable health and care

This report finds that 45 per cent of decisions about patients' care could be improved which could lead to efficiency savings for health and social care services. It finds that up to one in four people are admitted to hospital unnecessarily and could be looked after elsewhere if better use was made of services available to treat people closer to home. The report examined areas where integration of health and social care was working and found that fewer people needed to be looked after in residential care.

The newly published ratings on mental health and maternity services have been published by NHS England on the My NHS website. The data highlights areas that are performing well and also helps to identify where improvements can be made. The ratings can be broken down by CCG and can help CCGs to self-assess more effectively and target areas in need of improvement.
